[RESOLVED] I seem to be locked out of my unRAID server.

Hey everybody:

I’m fairly new to unRAID and I am still setting up my home media server on my unRAID 5 box.  I managed to get the system up and running with 8 storage drives, 1 parity and a 32GB SSD cache drive. I got unMENU up and running.  Then I started with the plugin’s.  Plex, SABnzbd, CP, SB.

Things appeared to be working, except the 32 GB SD Cache drive was always so full that everything would lock up.  So, I switched out my way too small 32 GB SD Cache drive for a 500 GB WD Caviar Blue drive that had previously been in my HTPC.  I just disconnected the SSD, and plugged in the WD Caviar Blue drive without removing any of the existing data on the drive, but there was plenty of free space.

When I rebooted, the first time, I had access to everything like usual, so with all my new found cache space I went nuts and installed a bunch of new plug-ins (don’t even really remember which ones now, as this was a couple weeks ago).  I recall one or more might have said something about requiring security or a password, but it was late, and I wasn't really thinking, and just put them on anyway, figuring I’d try them out, and remove them if I didn't find them useful, or if they caused problems.  I’d swear I rebooted, and still had access to the array after that.

Then I told UnRAID to format the new cache drive, and finally went to bed. The next day I shut down the array, and when unRAID rebooted, I discovered that the unRAID box only appears on my windows boxes through MiniDLNA as a media server (with nothing accessible on it). [The Win7 machine might see the USB flash drive only in an explorer window under an expanded network.] Additionally, all the shares I’d set up as network drives on my windows based desktop (7), HT-PC (Vista) and laptop (8) no longer find the associated drives, and I can’t even telnet into the unRAID box with PUTTY. I can’t access the unRAID box with Chrome, Firefox or IE, using the name (I named mine unRAID instead of Tower) or static IP address (192.168.1.124) either.  I've cleared the cache’s on all browsers, and tried each from all 3 different versions of Windows, and get the same result.

Strangely, unMENU works (except for the tab that holds the official unRAID main menu).  Also, I can ping the static IP address, and the unRAID box is there (well, of course it is).

I’d read some other posts about being “locked out” (http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=31868.0) that suggested fdisk’ing the USB stick, and looking at/editing the password files (config/passwd, config/group, config/smbpasswd).  I only found passwd and /smbpasswd, and viewing copies of them in NoteTab showed nothing that appeared to indicate any passwords were even being used.  I did fix the errors windows found on the USB stick, but that had no effect.  Unlike frankriess in that thread, I've stopped the array from unMenu and restarted the machine using the good ol' power switch a dozen times or more, and still am locked out.

Any ideas on how to get back in?

Attach a monitor and keyboard. Boot in SAFE mode.

Sounds like one of the plugins is preventing unraid from booting up all the way.  Do what trurl says.

Sent from a mobile device, sorry for any typos.

I'll try that when I get home tonight.

But if it’s one of the plugin’s couldn't I disable them all by renaming the extra and plugins directories instead?

Any reason I shouldn't try that first?

[because finding a monitor, keyboard and LAN cable together that I can plug the unRAID box into might prove to be quite a hassle]

Yes, that was the way we used to do it before SAFE mode was implemented, so that should work. Also, revert to stock go file.

Basically, the same advice as seen in dgaschk's signature

Thanks trurl and sureguy.

Got back in with the steps in dgaschk's signature.

Now to either re-install Plex, SABnzbd, CouchPotato & SickBeard; or to figure out how to remove the other plugins (or at least the one causing the system to hang. :(
