July 17, 201411 yr got this card 3Ware AMCC 12 Port SATA PCI-X RAID Controller W/ 12 SATA Cables 9550SX-12SI with what it seems to be http://www.esaitech.com/molex-79576-3003-internal-minisas-sff-8087-to-4-7-pin-sata-sas-fanout-cable.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjw6J2eBRCpqaW0857k9p4BEiQAWarYbHSCOI5O9AywtYxU2yGFSEq5C-SzjqtZ6F0u0-_m0ksaAsZH8P8HAQ look exactly like that.. slot #1 of mb, i see the card bios - i can enter with alt-3... no drives... Drives led are light. tried all backplane combinations i connected p0-p1-p2-p3 on raid card from bottom going up, to plane on bottom of norco 4020, i see green light of backplane light up when i put a drive on that level . drives are SAS IBM X-server drives. 150gig. im running out of ideas. what else can i do ? if on boot i dont see them i wont see them later on neither , so i must pass this step. is it possible that my cable is forward/reverse wrong ? why would they make 4 sata to sas connectors in reverse ? norco is the style where it has 4 MOLEX MOLEX --------------------- PLUG SAS/SATA ---------------- 4 pin ? ------------------10 pin ? 3 MOLEX MOLEX --------------------- PLUG SAS/SATA ---------------- 4 pin ? ------------------10 pin ? 2 MOLEX MOLEX --------------------- PLUG SAS/SATA ---------------- 4 pin ? ------------------10 pin ? 1 MOLEX MOLEX --------------------- PLUG SAS/SATA ---------------- 4 pin ? ------------------10 pin ? tried connecting backplanes 1-2-3 and backplanes 4-3-2
July 18, 201411 yr Author cable is this COMAX SERIAL ATA 30AWG E173433-D AWM STYLE 2725 its a 4 sata to sas or whatever the connector is on norco backplane should i get http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4291342&csid=_61 ? this https://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10254&cs_id=1025406&p_id=8187&seq=1&format=2 is to connect from mb to norco only right ? btw neweeg shows as motherboard OR raid card.. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133033&cm_re=norco-_-16-133-033-_-Product not sure on this one.. ill get the diger direct i guess another conflicting post... http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=10547.msg100303#msg100303 it says reverse is for mobo to backplane... here too http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=16307.msg150715#msg150715 this one says reverse is for controler to norco http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=11787.msg112472#msg112472 so which is it ? i need from 3ware 12 port to -> norco backplane.
July 18, 201411 yr Starting from the controller to the drives it works like this Mini-SAS ===> Forward Breakout Cable ===> SATA Ports SATA Ports ===> Reverse Breakout Cable ===> Mini-SAS Sound like you need a reverse breakout cable.
July 18, 201411 yr Author thats waht i got currently but the norco 4020 's drives are not seen. not sure what option i could change in bios.
July 18, 201411 yr Zugman is correct, the cable you listed at the very top (the "fanout" cable) is a forward cable for connecting SAS -> SATA. You need a reverse cable for connecting SATA -> SAS, specifically one like the "NORCO C-SFF8087-4S Discrete to SFF-8087" that you listed.
July 19, 201411 yr Author wow this is confusing... norco said forward.. You need forward breakout cable for 4020. Please check. Thanks and Regards, Mike Wang Norco Technologies Inc. =============== me Such as this right? 0.75m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male w/ Latch to SATA 7pin Female (x4) Forward Breakout Cable - Black =============== norco Yes Thanks and Regards, Mike Wang Norco Technologies Inc. 17531 Railroad Street
July 24, 201411 yr Well. Uh. I don't know what to say, but Norco is wrong. They even sell the correct cable for their case: http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=6&modelno=c-sff8087-4s http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816133033 Note the part where it says: Connector on Case Backplane End: 1 x 36-pin - SFF-8087. Connector on Raid Controller or Motherboard End: 4 x 7-pin - SATA Read here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7003.0
July 25, 201411 yr Author doesnt work, ill try the forward cable the reverse from my raid card aint seeing drives, but bios =ok ill let you know
July 31, 201411 yr Author seems that now itried a normal SATA drive and it works.... but not the sas drives.. Drives are : I ruled out the backplanes ( good news ) It’s the drives, It seems plugging in a normal sata drive works, but not SAS. My SAS drives are IBM E Server Drives P/n 42C0251 146.8 GB 10k rpm SAS Model ST9146802SS http://discountechnology.com/Seagate-ST9146802SS-SAS-Hard-Drive#specs any idea ?
July 31, 201411 yr I tried to look up the controller you are using. I'm not sure I found the right one, but it appears to be a SATA controller and therefore does not support SAS drives. Do you have the exact model number?
July 31, 201411 yr Author i thikn your right... darn.. in description it does talk about SAS drives... its an old 3Ware AMCC 12 Port SATA PCI-X RAID Controller W/ 12 SATA Cables 9550SX-12SI from http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816116033 in specs: i see On-board PowerPC RISC processor provides true hardware RAID — SCSI device driver model to take advantage of the benefits of SCSI using inexpensive Serial ATA drives oups...read that SAS, not SATA lol oh well ill get new cards then
August 1, 201411 yr May I ask why you are messing with those low capacity SAS drives? Why don't you get some fancy drives instead? Although I don't know if your 3ware dino will support those big drives...
