July 18, 201411 yr I'm currently running 5.0.5. I've had some issues in the past, but the server has been working great lately until a power issue in our neighborhood. My UPS wasn't working properly and it seemed to have taken out my parity drive. I replaced the drive the next day and got the UPS functional. The data rebuilt without issue and all was well until a few days ago. It seems that connectivity will stop with the server completely. I won't be able to access it via http or ssh. I have to do a hard reboot and then everything works for a while....until today. I had major issues getting emhttp to run at all even when the server came up completely. I eventually downloaded the 5.0.5 files again and replaced them on my flash drive. I booted the server up, all seemed well. I could access the HTTP interface and everything, the disks looked good from the main screen. Apparently the discs never mounted. Trying to access the server via SMB caused issues and I couldn't get anywhere. I restarted the server again and it hung on the reboot (on the monitor I have connected to it). Now, it's currently froze on "loading bzroot". The screen will eventually start to go crazy like the attached picture. I have made sure that everything was plugged in fully before the last few restarts. I'm at a loss of what could be happening. Could it be a faulty motherboard from the power issues or possibly the USB drive going nuts? EDIT: It seems to have been a mobo/RAM problem. I replaced the motherboard and RAM and all is well currently.
July 18, 201411 yr Corrupted video like that is more likely to be RAM or motherboard issues. Try running the memtest boot option until it pops errors or 24 hours elapses, whichever comes first. I just recently had a motherboard do something similar to me. I had all 4 memory slots full, and it would be flakey until I would pull 2 modules. Didn't matter which 2, and the memory tested fine individually, but the board lost the ability to drive all 4 slots without error. I suspect if I replaced a capacitor or 3 it would fix it, but it was time for a new board anyway.
July 19, 201411 yr Author Thanks for the recommendation. I tried to get the server to boot back up to the unRAID USB drive to run a memtest and I can't get it to boot at all. After it goes through POST it gives a success beep and goes to hardware monitor. I'm going to try a different thumb drive to see if I can get it booted also.
July 19, 201411 yr Author I'm considering upgrading to this board (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128565&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=) and getting memory that will work with this board. I recently upgraded to an AMD Phenom II X4 945 and i'd rather not buy another CPU <3 months after this last one. The chipsets are the same for these boards. I don't think there will be any issues. Do you think this would be a good idea?
