Server Spontaneously Powers Down Overnight

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My server has taken to powering itself down in the early hours of the morning. I’m running 5.0.5 pro. The powerdown 2.06 package is installed via unmenu 1.6. I’m attaching a couple of logs. Any insights would be appreciated.

The syslogs indicate powerdown is invoked. Do you have anything that might be invoking it, like the overtemp shutdown package?

Maybe you have a cat sitting on the power button in the middle of the night. That has happened on my PC.

Try something simple like running with no packages or plugins to see if the problem re-occurs.  If it does you might have a hardware issue.

Wow that's amazing  ;D - great basis for 'cat ate my homework'. How did you discover the guilty party? Our Sparky is very smart but he'd have to log in and invoke power down. I usually operate headless but recently I connected a keyboard & monitor for a preclear so given your cat experience I'll disconnect the keyboard just in case.

cheers

Thanks (or should I say Kansha) Sideband I'll give that a try if operating headless doesn't work.

cheers

Sparky from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation?

Actually, if things are working correctly, a single short push of the power button will invoke the power down script.

My unRAID server is in a cabinet where the cats can't get to it. My PC is in a Fractal Design case with the power button on top. Sometimes they would just push it long enough to sleep it. Other times they would sit on it long enough to shut it completely down.

I figured it out by seeing it happen while I was sitting at the computer one day. The button is recessed somewhat but big enough for a cat's paw. I now keep a heavy stone coaster sitting on the power button so they can't push it.

try to disable some unmenu scripts for auto-shutdown, or modify the settings.

for example, shutdown-on-overheat might be set too low and causing this??
