July 29, 201411 yr I just moved to Unraid 6 yesterday and I plan to use a Windows 7 VM alongside. I plan on using my music server software in Windows 7 i.e. Asset UPNP DLNA server and Minimserver. Is there a preferred method to accomplish this? Shoud I use unraid as guest or host? Sould I use Xen or KVM. Is my hardware suitable? I have a X9SCM with E3-1230 and 16 GB. I have no need for passing through graphic cards. Where does all this get installed? Do I need datastores like in ESXi? Could someone give some basic guidelines on how to set this up?
July 29, 201411 yr I would also be interested in some pointers for installing Windows in a VM. I do not have VT-D compatible hardware, but I do have VT-X (AMD-V anyway). I also have no current interest in passing through a GPU or anything that doesn't need to be. I just want a windows install that I can run 24/7 to do the tasks of various plugins and programs, I would like to access this using RDP. I have successfully followed a guide on the forums and installed ubuntu server in a VM on Unraid 6B5 using XEN. It wasn't too hard, although the guide was comprehensive. I'm just not very good with Linux, one day I would like to learn but that is not today. With so many projects on the go I want good old, know it inside out, windows to tinker with. Any assistance gratefully received!
July 31, 201411 yr There should be existing configurations out there for windows. You should be able to copy them as is and just remove the part that is passing through hardware.
July 31, 201411 yr Check here guys for a non pass through KVM XML for windows http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=33807.msg314555.msg#314555 Been running this config since b6 was released and it's solid as a rock, make sure to get the virtio driver ISO downloaded otherwise you won't be able to see your virtual disk.
