August 2, 201411 yr I have 16GB of RAM and its always almost completely utilized. Is this normal? Is there a way to see whats using it? The only activity currently on the server is Plex running and transcoding to 1 host on the LAN. The system is a E3-1240 V2 with supermicro board, 16GB RAM and 6 2TB disks. I occasionally have the unraid web interface become non responsive and searching the threads it sounds like it gets killed when memory is full. I've ran memory check with no issues, two 8GB Kingston ECC. I'm not real familiar with linux so maybe this is normal. root@Tower:~# free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 16090 15798 291 0 65 14217 -/+ buffers/cache: 1516 14573 Swap: 0 0 0 root@Tower:~# free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 16090 15804 286 0 64 14320 -/+ buffers/cache: 1418 14671 Swap: 0 0 0 root@Tower:~# more /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 16476308 kB MemFree: 302924 kB MemAvailable: 14883768 kB Buffers: 66608 kB Cached: 14554584 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 7908096 kB Inactive: 7117104 kB Active(anon): 799152 kB Inactive(anon): 34144 kB Active(file): 7108944 kB Inactive(file): 7082960 kB Unevictable: 0 kB Mlocked: 0 kB SwapTotal: 0 kB SwapFree: 0 kB Dirty: 484 kB Writeback: 0 kB AnonPages: 404036 kB Mapped: 92724 kB Shmem: 429280 kB Slab: 960704 kB SReclaimable: 895784 kB SUnreclaim: 64920 kB KernelStack: 5504 kB PageTables: 6816 kB NFS_Unstable: 0 kB Bounce: 0 kB WritebackTmp: 0 kB CommitLimit: 8238152 kB Committed_AS: 1120332 kB VmallocTotal: 34359738367 kB VmallocUsed: 304548 kB VmallocChunk: 34359428508 kB AnonHugePages: 133120 kB DirectMap4k: 6660 kB DirectMap2M: 16742400 kB top - 15:40:00 up 1 day, 3:10, 1 user, load average: 1.26, 1.37, 0.94 Tasks: 201 total, 1 running, 198 sleeping, 2 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 2.7%us, 10.2%sy, 0.2%ni, 86.9%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 16476308k total, 16180028k used, 296280k free, 66608k buffers Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 14561480k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 23780 unraid-p 20 0 1971m 106m 19m S 100 0.7 49:42.16 Plex Media Serv 24605 unraid-p 20 0 1285m 103m 11m S 4 0.6 3:14.77 Plex New Transc 19337 root 20 0 168 40 28 S 0 0.0 0:00.58 runsv 23769 root 20 0 168 40 28 S 0 0.0 0:39.72 runsv 1 root 20 0 4356 1552 1456 S 0 0.0 0:08.60 init 2 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.02 kthreadd 3 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:01.43 ksoftirqd/0 5 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/0:0H 7 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:22.25 rcu_sched 8 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 rcu_bh 9 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.51 migration/0 10 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.25 migration/1 11 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.46 ksoftirqd/1 13 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/1:0H 14 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.25 migration/2 15 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.46 ksoftirqd/2 16 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:02.12 kworker/2:0 17 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/2:0H 18 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.23 migration/3 19 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.49 ksoftirqd/3 21 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/3:0H 22 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.44 migration/4 23 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.17 ksoftirqd/4 24 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/4:0 25 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/4:0H 26 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.38 migration/5 27 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.07 ksoftirqd/5 29 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/5:0H 30 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.59 migration/6 31 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.09 ksoftirqd/6 33 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/6:0H 34 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.43 migration/7 35 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.06 ksoftirqd/7 37 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kworker/7:0H 38 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 khelper 39 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kdevtmpfs 40 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 netns 167 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 writeback 172 root 25 5 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 ksmd 175 root 39 19 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:02.13 khugepaged 181 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 bioset 183 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 crypto 188 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd 435 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 ata_sff 446 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.01 khubd 451 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 devfreq_wq 561 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 rpciod 603 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:10.50 kswapd0 672 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.02 fsnotify_mark 693 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 nfsiod 698 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 cifsiod 749 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 acpi_thermal_pm 824 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 vfio-irqfd-clea 839 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:01.16 kworker/4:1 913 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 bioset
August 3, 201411 yr Linux has both used and reserved and free ram, used is what is actually used by os programs..... Reserved is like free in windows but not exactly because the system is kind of ready to use it as needed, free is really free if it is needed then it takes a few more cycles than reserved to utilize it. I have 32gb ecc ram 1gb used 30 gb reserved 1gb free. Hope this helps Thornwood
August 3, 201411 yr Linux ate my RAM! I love that page. ALOT of unraid users have been directed there over the years ;D (including myself)
August 3, 201411 yr Me too ... it's a great page to describe why the RAM is all "allocated" but is still actually very much available as needed.
August 3, 201411 yr One of these days I found a very nice script that calculates how much resident and how much shared memory each program uses: https://github.com/pixelb/ps_mem It's written in python.
