Case recommendations

I'm looking for something like the Rosewill RSV-L4500 but not exactly.

I would like an affordable case that has 3x3x5.25" bays that will fit 5-in-3 hot swap cages like the Norco SS-500. I'm honestly not even sure if the above case can fit any, if it only has bays for mounting internal 3.5" drives. It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures whether those internal bays can be removed or modified to store something like the SS-500.

I also would like something that's not quite as long as that case. It's 25" long plus the handles. It seems at least 3" longer than necessary to hold a regular ATX board and something like the Norco SS-500 in front of it. But if the RSV-L4500 will work then I can't complain too much.

You might ask, why don't I just save up and get something like the NORCO RPC-4020? I have a couple reasons... first of all it's also super long so it's not quite ideal. The second reason is I have had a bad experience with 2 of the 2 of these I have ever worked with. One of them, drives would not stay connected when multiple drives were being written at once. It seemed like the vibration would knock them out. The other one, my friend had and the top lid became warped and stuck. He had to cut it open with an angle grinder. Maybe we were just unlucky? Also, I can imagine having 15 drives in a case but in all likelihood I will never have more than 12, maybe even 10. I'm starting with 5. A case that could grow to hold 3 cages with 5 drives each would be ideal. I would use one for now, and possibly add a second or third cage later.

You might also ask, if I had bad experience with Norco before, why would I buy their 5 in 3 cages? I have no idea...maybe I shouldn't, but they seem pretty well regarded here.

I think you might have a hard time finding a rack mount case that is less than 25".  I was looking early this year to have a rack built into my desk but I was limited to about 25" and was only able to find one case, I believe it was called the xcase.  It was about 300 pounds or over $500 plus shipping to the US.  There is a thread some where on this forum tiled something like "cases that have 5.25 inch bays from top to bottom" I was able to find a desktop case that had 9x9.25" drive bays witch is one of your requirements.

Found the thread.

My case

Nexus Prominent 9

Here's a rack case that's a good deal shorter than 25":

This one is less than ideal because some of the drive bays will be mounted one way and one drive bay will be mounted another way. I guess I can't get everything I want...also I'm not sure how having no fans in the center of the case will affect the air flow.

Also this, but shipping to the USA kinda kills it. I'd like something like this, just not filled in with hot swap bays from the start.

The nexus prominient 9 looks like a great option but I'm having a hard time finding it for sale anywhere. I emailed the manufacturer.

Just out of curiosity, did you e-mail them for a quote on the shipping?  It'd be interesting to know what it actually costs.    The case itself isn't too bad ($385.81 at today's exchange rate) ... I suspect the shipping will double that, but there are some less expensive alternatives -- I just don't know if X-Case supports any of those methods.

I got mine from amazon but it appears to not be available there anymore

I got a quote for a different case, the d416, and the shipping only came to 45 pounds, about $110. The price with shipping is still competitive with what's available in the US.

That's actually very reasonable ... a lot less than I would have expected.    The d424s would be more, of course, but probably not enough more to be a "deal killer".    Might come in at something around $550 delivered to the US ... not cheap, but only about $100 more than a Norco 424 and a lot less than a 24-bay SuperMicro.
