Can you Migrate ESXi / VMware / VirtualBox VM to Unraid Xen 6?

Featured Replies

Hey Folks,

I am currently running Unraid 5 on an ESXi environment.  On the ESXi, I also have a few Windows VM running.  With Unraid 6, I am excited to see that XEN is also included.  I was able to get Unraid 6 w/ Xen running a fresh Windows 7 VM.  Which is awesome.

I wanted to see if any know if it is possible to migrate an ESXi VM to Unraid XEN6.  I am familar with ESXi, VMWare Workstation, VMWare Fusion, and Virtual Box.  I can migrate VMs between those systems, but have never done it to Xen, let alone Xen on Unraid 6.

I have seen this article on how to Migrate VMWare to XENServer, but I am not sure if this translates properly for Unraid Xen: http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX116603

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've not tried that, but it certainly seems the process outlined in the article you reference would work fine.    Once the VM is in OVF format, it shouldn't be any problem to import it into Xen.

I was wondering the same thing.  looking at the article it seems that the xen center is needed and last I checked unraid xen did not support xen center or am I missing something?

yeah.. I know I can get out an .OVF files from ESXi.. just not sure how to get it into Unraid.  When I built my VM on Unraid, it was a .IMG file and the configs were in a .CFG file.

I did remember seeing a web based Xen manager, but I cant find it.  I recall that in order to run the web based xen manager you needed to have PHP running on the unraid box.  If I find it, I will see if I can manage the xen server like vCenter.

Edit:

lol.. the program i remember seeing is called PHP-XEN.  https://www.openhub.net/p/php-xen  Not sure if this will work for us, or how to even get it to work.  I am not that familar with Linux.

Edit 2:

Looks like they are trying to get XO (Xen Orchertra) to work with Unraid, but the version of Xen unraid has is behind what they http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=31851.15  Not sure if that will help with the migration of a VM from ESXi/Vmware to Xen.
