"factory-cleared" and avoiding zeroing time when adding new drives?

Featured Replies

Greetings,

I've got an array that currently consists of 3 1.5 TB drives.  I want to add 2 more 1.5 TB drives, but I'm hoping to find a way of pre-zeroing them so that I don't have to have the array down while unRaid zeros the drives.  Is this possible?

I'm hoping that it is because I see a few references to the fact that unRaid can recognized "factory-cleared" drives.  Unfortunately, though, I can find no constructive information as to how this feature is utilized or what it really means for a drive to be "factory-cleared".

The two new drives are literally untouched drives, straight from the manufacturer.  Because of this, I figured I'd try just sticking them in to see what happens.  When I did that, the system started to zero them.  I waited about 10 minutes but the % complete never went past 0%.  Since I coudn't have the array down for the rest of the day, and I could find no way of stopping the zeroing process, I pulled out the new drives and reset the unRaid host.  This worked, so I'm back up with the original drives.

So, is there a way for me to do the zeroing of the new drives while the array is up, either offline or through unRaid's UI?

BTW, it seems like it would be a fairly simple enhancement for unRaid to be able to zero the drives without taking the array down.  It would simply keep those drives out of the array while zeroing them, and would then add them to the array once zeroed, possibly requiring that the array be brought down and back up at that point.

TIA for any help.

Yes there is, but this is a user added enhancement and not officially supported... the details and script can be found here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.msg23246#msg23246

Cheers,

Cool Matt.  I'll check it out.  And I'll add my suggestion at improving this to the Feature Requests forum.

You can find various scripts and addons for unRAID on the UnRAID Add Ons wiki page, such as the Preclear Disk tool.
