August 12, 201411 yr Hi I'm newbie just going to try and setup a hp mini server do I need a parity drive to start with? As I only have 1 3tb wd red A parity drive is optional. In fact many people recommend starting without a parity drive when doing the initial data load as that maximises the speed of the load. Note, however, that until you add a parity drive any data on the array is not protected against disk failure.

USB sticks are notorious for failing when subject to constant writing. It's much better practice to use a hard drive or SSD, something that is designed for constant writes.
