August 13, 201411 yr Recently, I changed motherboard in my unraid server and I have a very strange problem.. When I put only two sticks of memory out of 4 available slots, unraid recognises only one of them if I put them in dual channel mode.. If I put them in single channel, then they're recognised correctly both of them... But if I put another two sticks of memory at the other channel, then unraid recognises only two of them (the half)... Everywhere else it's ok (in windows and bios)... Also in top command I see all the available memory. It seems it's something with the unraid os. I've reseated the sticks many times, with many different combinations... Can't figure it out.. Any help will be appreciated.
August 14, 201411 yr What makes you think unRAID only sees half the memory? In fact you seem to contradict yourself slightly by stating that top sees all of it. As far as I know memory recognition is a function of he Bios on the machine - unRAID simply uses what the bios reports. However from what you say the Bios is seeing all of it? It is not at all uncommon for motherboards with more than 2 memory slots to have issues using more than 2 slots in my experience - particularily with higher clock-speed RAM. The problem can be aggravated if the RAM modules are not a matched set.
August 14, 201411 yr Author The Ram is a matched pair set. I use stock speeds in BIOS. The memory is 800Mhz, and I also tried 667 and 533 Mhz.. The same results.... If I press info in unraid web gui then I see only 1024MB from 2048MB I see in top... Also when I move files, only the 1024MB is used (according to top). The rest 1024 is available... Before I change the M/B, when I was moving files, the 97-98% of 2048MB memory was used....
