[SOLVED] I think my drive is failing.

Featured Replies

Ok so I tend to dip in and out of here, which means my knowledge is a bit flakey at times, so apologies if any of this is dumb!

I think a drive is failing. XBMC keeps buffering a lot, then this last week or so has been unusable from the shares that cover this drive.

I ran a smart test and included it, I'm thinking the bit that says old age is the reason the array hasn't totally failed??

Is the short version new drive needed?

I did try a parity check...took over 2 days, and only seems to have half helped..

Zip and post a syslog and smart reports from the rest of your drives. The one you posted looks pretty bad, hopefully the rest are healthy. Unraid can only rebuild 1 bad drive, so it is important that the rest of your drives are good.

EDIT: Apologies I saw you said zip it after I'd done them.

I've gone with the quick scans first

None of the remaining drive show obvious signs of issues.

One thing that you should check in these SMART reports is whether the counts for pending reallocated sectors are none-zero as that indicates that the drive has had problems reading some sectors.  You also want to watch the count for reallocated sectors as if this is none-zero and keeps growing you have issues.  If they are all zero then the drive is normally OK.

Thank you.

I seem to be access all the drives if I ignore the share and go to the drive on it's own which is what has been throwing me.

I mean I can even get to the first disk which I assume is the issue, it's just very very very slow and unresponsive (is that the parity drive keeping the array afloat?)

The fact it passed the SMART test confuses me, I would've thought it would have failed, and shown errors.

So I can get this clear in my head, and hopefully help someone else in future, when it shows errors that's the warning signs the drive is dying?

There are two points to note:

  • If a drive is 'red=balled' then unRAID will emulate it using the other drives.
  • In your case it might be worth removing the problem drive to check that unRAID is emulating your drive correctly.  At that point you have the options to copy files elsewhere before attempting any recovery.
  • A loose connection (or inadequate power) can cause errors on a drive.

Cool, it's not reballed, hasn't been either.

Bar those errors it looks perfectly normal, maybe 3-4 years of use.

So if I remove it, I.e. just disconnect the sata, will the array just pick up without it? Though no backup?

If I've filled every available connection on the motherboard, I'm going to have to run without a back up for some time while I buy/preclear another disk, so I just want to be 100% sure before I do anything!

Any drive that is sowing pending sectors is suspect for use with unRAID.  Recovering a failed drive relies on all the other drives being good.

Exactly.  It should start up with the drive flagged as missing and noting the array is unprotected, and using the other drives to emulate the missing one..  If you have space elsewhere you can copy the files off that 'emulated' drive before attempting any recovery.
