August 21, 201411 yr Hello all. I would like to digitise a load of my CD/DVD/BR collection and store them on my Unraid server. Since I have now got an ultrabook with no internal drive, I need to buy an external drive. There don't seem to be many full size external BR drives around, only slimline. I don't mind buying a fullsize 5.25" drive and putting it in an enclosure, but are the slimline USB drives of a decent quality these days? I was thinking of something like a Samsung 506CB: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Slim-Portable-Blu-ray-Drive/dp/B00INGA7F6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408614947&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+506cb (looks a bit plasticky tbh) Or buying a fullsize drive: http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-CH12NS30-AUAU10B-12x-Blu-ray-Combo/dp/B00DJA3VO0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1408615141&sr=8-3&keywords=lg+bluray+drive and either finding an enclosure (not so common these days) or using some sort of SATA->USB converter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Storite-Supports-2-5-Inch-3-5-Inch-5-25-Inch/dp/B00K3G1M80/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1408615279&sr=8-10&keywords=sata+usb+cable So overall I just want something that will give me good reliable rips. If it is portable and doens't require a power brick that is a bonus. Anybody have any experience of these products or advice in general? Cheers
August 22, 201411 yr I have both a pioneer and Asus external slim drives and both read disks better than my LG internal Sent from my LG-D802T using Tapatalk
September 1, 201411 yr Author So I ended up buying an LG slim drive: http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-BP40NB30-AUAE-Slim-External-Blue-ray/dp/B00JHAJ5GE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409575502&sr=8-1&keywords=lg+bp40nb30 I choose this one as the drive is actually LG-Hitachi and they come out very well in reliability tests. It is well made and a definite step up from the equivalent Samsung drive (which had a tacky glossy finish and poor plastics IMO) IMO, the drive is superb. I have thus far had no problems reading all sorts of media. I only paid €79 from the local Media Markt. Very happy
