August 21, 201411 yr I have here one disk (ST3000DM001) that starts pre-clearing and after 38% it stops with the following error messages in the log. Re-starting pre-cleairing brings it to 38% again and it hangs there and disappears from the OS. Any idea is greatly appreciated? Aug 20 17:33:49 unraid kernel: Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Aug 20 17:33:49 unraid kernel: sd 14:0:0:0: [sdm] CDB: Aug 20 17:33:49 unraid kernel: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 7c 00 00 00 00 08 00 00 Aug 20 17:33:49 unraid kernel: sd 14:0:0:0: [sdm] Unhandled error code Aug 20 17:33:49 unraid kernel: sd 14:0:0:0: [sdm]
August 21, 201411 yr It sounds as if the drive may have a problem. It would be worth including the SMART report for the drive. It could also be worth attaching the drive to a PC and carrying out the manufacturers check (Using SeaTools I think?).
August 21, 201411 yr Author Thanks. Will hook it up to a PC (only have an XP here for this, should be ok).. SMART I get the following: # smartctl -A -t short -d ata /dev/sdm smartctl version 5.38 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device) A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.
August 22, 201411 yr Try running the command as smartctl -a /dev/sdm . That works for me to get a report.
August 23, 201411 yr Author Same error message. Will check with Seatools as soon as I get to the server.
August 23, 201411 yr Same error message. Will check with Seatools as soon as I get to the server. Interesting. It sounds as if this drive might be really sick and need RMA'ing. At least SeaTools gives you the diagnostic information that Seagate RAM process wants.
