August 25, 201411 yr Hi All, Attached here is my crash log (crashlog.txt), syslog after restart (syslog.txt) and a snap of the connected monitor messages when the freeze happens. Running unRAID 5.0.5 When it freezes - Webgui (dynamix) is not reachable, SAMBA goes down, telnet or ssh through putty does not work (host not reachable), even a monitor being connected becomes unresponsive. Nothing else but a hard reset/reboot seems to work, and I have done that a few times already. Plugins installed: Dynamix web GUI unmenu and a few packages - mainly used one is mysql server Plex Media Server SAB (plugin by PhAzE) Sickbeard (plugin by PhAzE) Couchpotato (plugin by PhAzE) Headphones (now removed) Crashplan (now removed) Crashplan GUI (now removed) Log was obtained by leaving the log window open after the reboot until the crash (copied and pasted into a txt file), the picture is that of what showed on the connected monitor after the freeze. Any help trying to identify the problem and a fix for it is much appreciated. Is it one of my drives or is it anything to do with the plugins? I am not an expert and don't have a clue what is going on, is learning with unRAID and all your help. Thanks, Abhi crashlog.txt syslog.zip
August 25, 201411 yr Im not an expert either but have you tried booting into safe mode first to see if its one of your plugins causing the problems?
August 25, 201411 yr Author No I haven't, will try that thanks. I did some troubleshooting on my own and these are a few things I noticed and based on which I have questions, any and all help is appreciated. 1) Does anyone know what this means? This keeps scrolling on the monitor connected to the tower. The array was stopped at the time I saw this. 2) Also from the syslog - this concerns me - not sure if this is just a bad SATA cable (hope it is) or something worse (like a bad drive). These are the filtered results from uu syslog - filtered for errors. August 27, 201411 yr As the previous user suggested try safe mode to rule out an issue with any plugins. Then you can investigate further.
August 27, 201411 yr Author I have...logged into safe mode yesterday and will check and report how it is going once I am back home.
August 28, 201411 yr Author Okay the tower has been running in safe mode since yesterday evening. It hasn't frozen yet, but there are a lot of errors and the same xattr warning in the syslog. August 28, 201411 yr Author Tom's script on the top level directories of all discs returned nothing - and I do not use AFP (don't have any Apple devices), I used to use both NFS and SAMBA but now only SAMBA is used. Noticed that that error only happens when the mover is running. Also the tower is still up on safe mode.
August 28, 201411 yr Author No. Just confirmed 11 of those movies are on Disk 1 and 8 are on Disk 2. So about 60/40 split. It has to be related to the mover and the cache disk (sdh1) - I am pretty sure of that. All these movies were not moved yesterday night as it should have been.
August 28, 201411 yr It sounds like it is. I really can't help with that as I don't use a cache disk. I only move about 100Gb per week and with modern hard drives etc it wouldn't give me any advantage in speed and so many posts on the forum seem to be related to cache disk problems its something I can do without.
August 29, 201411 yr Author Thank you megalodon! Appreciate you trying - and good choice. I did have some rather tangible copying speed benefits (as per Teracopy) over a Gigabit network when I started using the cache disk and been using it for over a year and never had any of these issues. it worked smoothly and behind the scenes as it was designed to do. It was after I installed a mysql server (through a uu package) that all this started. I did install that on my cache drive and then later moved it to to an array disk. But the problems still persist.
August 29, 201411 yr Author Already done (as mentioned a couple of posts above) and I used the wiki as well and your instructions once before on this. There were multiple warnings regarding my cache drive like this - Aug 25 11:27:54 Tower kernel: REISERFS warning (device sdh1): jdm-20001 reiserfs_xattr_get: Invalid magic for xattr (system.posix_acl_default) associated with [1953724787 1882090853 0x7869736f UNKNOWN] (Minor Issues) Aug 25 11:57:28 Tower kernel: REISERFS warning (device sdh1): jdm-20001 reiserfs_xattr_get: Invalid magic for xattr (system.posix_acl_default) associated with [1953724787 1882090853 0x7869736f UNKNOWN] (Minor Issues) Aug 25 12:37:42 Tower kernel: REISERFS warning (device sdh1): jdm-20001 reiserfs_xattr_get: Invalid magic for xattr (system.posix_acl_default) associated with [1953724787 1882090853 0x7869736f UNKNOWN] (Minor Issues) So based on what I read on the forum and from some instructions I had previously I ran reiserfsck which resulted in no corruptions found. root@Tower:~# reiserfsck --check /dev/sdh1 reiserfsck 3.6.24 Will read-only check consistency of the filesystem on /dev/sdh1 Will put log info to 'stdout' Do you want to run this program?[N/Yes] (note need to type Yes if you do):Yes ########### reiserfsck --check started at Mon Aug 25 16:59:56 2014 ########### Replaying journal: Done. So hope that is fixed for good. The top error part is what my question is mainly about - what does that mean? I do have a SATA port multiplier connected to the motherboard - this one specifically All help appreciated - Thanks in advance! Abhi I thought it had disappeared but it did not!
August 29, 201411 yr Hello abhi.ko, I have been an unRAID user since unRAID 5Beta14, so for around 2 years. Like yourself I have had third party plugins like sickbeard and Sabnzbd. The sad fact is that while yes you should be able to get plugins running on your system for more than 24 hours. It's unlikely you will ever reach true stability on unraid 5x with plugins installed. I would literally have to reboot my server at least once a month, and just recently I started having similar issues to you where it wouldn't stay up for more than 24 hours without odd errors. The reason for this, is because you are running third party code in the form of plugins, that have not been fully tested like the base OS is. Plugins are basically hobby software. (No disrespect to the developers of plugins, I love you guys, but plugin creators don't have the time or resources to fully test their ports of other software) And then you run into the issues of some plugins expect certain pre-requisites with certain versions, etc. This all leads to stability problems. The answer to your problems here in my opinion is Docker. Docker is literally the cure all to these types of issues. You have already proven that the system is running stable without plugins running, in fact right before switching to Unraid 6 with Docker I had almost the exact same Reiserfs errors you are having. If you switch to Unraid 6 with docker it basically allows you to install each plugin in an isolated container which holds all the dependencies that application needs, without interfering with other plugins, or the base OS, it's super great, and I believe that once you switch to it, these issues you are having will be a thing of the past. That's what ended up working for me.
August 29, 201411 yr Author Thanks guyonphone! That gives me a reason to switch to the beta release from a stable one (trust me I have been looking for one). Not familiar with docker though, did some initial reading on it and took the 10 minute tutorial, and I got to admit it looks pretty useful. But just wanted to mention that for the past 24 hours (around 28 actually) I have been running unRAID 5.0.5 in safe mode (no plugins), that addresses the stability issue (I hope) and the concern now is the errors even without the plugins enabled. Unless you consider unmenu and the packages the same as 3rd party plugins (Safe mode did not disable that). The most recent syslog attached here and the errors I have pasted (rsync while moving and the xattr related warnings etc) are all while running in safe mode. Not sure what is causing that?
August 29, 201411 yr Author Docker looks really cool, whether it be an answer to my problems or not - I am thinking about giving it a try. So how did you install it - did you use the binaries or is there a packaged version that would work on unRAID?
August 29, 201411 yr Here is the quick and dirty of what you would have to do: 1. Backup your current configuration. 2. Download and install Unraid 6 on your flash drive. 3. Boot Unraid using the default option (Not Xen) (There isn't any harm in choosing the Xen option that I am aware of, but for now I wouldn't add any complication) You are now 64-bit hooray! 4. You will notice that Unraid 6 looks like dynamix but with less features (Currently Dynamix does not work with Unraid 6 do not attempt to install it) 5. You need to backup the contents of your cache drive. 6. Now that your cache drive is backed up, you need to format your cache drive in btrfs (You will loose all information on it!) Follow Jonp's guide here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=33805.0 7. Once the cache drive has been formatted with btrfs, and you have started docker, install gfjardim's plugin called "Extended Docker Configuration Page" here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=33965.0 This is the only plugin you will be installing. 8. Once installed gfjardim has done most of the hardwork for you, at this point you can use his plugin to choose from a default list of working dockers. The plugin already knows the reepos and will just go ahead and fetch what you need for each program. You will need to do some reading on how to configure the correct paths for what you want, etc. But it's all pretty easy. His plugin also gives you the option to manually input a repo if you want to add a program not available in his list.
August 29, 201411 yr But just wanted to mention that for the past 24 hours (around 28 actually) I have been running unRAID 5.0.5 in safe mode (no plugins), that addresses the stability issue (I hope) and the concern now is the errors even without the plugins enabled. Unless you consider unmenu and the packages the same as 3rd party plugins (Safe mode did not disable that). I hear you on this, and ultimately it is a decision you will have to make for yourself. If you would like to see the issues I was having, my old thread from about 2 weeks ago is here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=34641.0 I didn't follow the same troubleshooting path you did, but here is what I can tell you. 1. I blew away my entire configuration and installed UNRAID 5.5 with all the plugins again. Within hours I would have I/O errors. Unraid would tell me it was an issue with my cache drive. The resolution posted, for that issue didn't actually resolve the issue. It came back hours later, but I didn't update it, because I made the decision to switch to unraid 6. 2. I ran a reiserfsck check that came back clean. So did my SMART checks. 3. Sill had the issue, I was very hesitant to switch to unraid 6. But once I heard about docker and what it was capapble of, I was sure it was the answers to my issues. Now here is the deal. I am not an expert in Linux by any means. I can tell you 100% I have no freaking clue what is going on with your system right now. But I can tell you that my system was having strange random errors for what seemed like no reason to me, when I installed all the plugins I wanted (Sickbeard, Sabnzbd) and when I switched to unraid 6 with docker, my issues cleared right the heck up. No more IO errors. I can't explain why I had IO errors before and don't afterwards, but I can tell you that the results thus far have been wonderful, and I hope if you decide to make the switch it would work for you as well. It is a kind of a nuke from orbit approach, so you are right to be cautious.
August 29, 201411 yr I think guyonthephone has offered you some good advise here. I will ultimately be moving to V6 in time and if V6 and Docker can cure you problems I would go for it. From what I understand V6 is very stable so it may be worth moving over to it to see if your problems clear up.
August 29, 201411 yr Author Thank you guyonphone! That was really helpful. I will be switching over soon and will report progress. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction (did not know about Docker at all till now).
