Ability to manually mark a drive as disabled

Apologies if this has already been posted somewhere in the roadmap forum and subforums, but a search did not show anything immediately related.

After going through an issue where a data drive was suffering from READ errors but not WRITE errors (documented here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=35014.0 ), the following feature is part of a larger feature set to bring this situation to the user's attention as early as possible.

Ability to manually mark a drive as disabled as it prevents the need to have physical access to the server

This is an alternate sub-feature if there is some requirement to only allow certain operations on disabled drives, such as replacing or rebuilding the drive.

This is already available - albeit maybe in a non-obvious way.  The sequence is:

  • Stop the Array
  • Set the problem drive to not assigned
  • Start the array.  It will warn you that the array is unprotected and a drive is missing.  At this point unRAID 'forgets' the serial number of the drive previously assigned.
  • Stop the array
  • You can now assign any drive you like (including the one unassigned above).  When you start the array unRAID will start a rebuild onto the drive just assigned.

I agree a simple check box in the GUI that effectively did the steps to get the drive unassigned would be a nice addition.  The logical place to add such a box would be on the dialog displayed when you click on the drive in the main tab of the GUI.
