Hardware Config / Build - App.Server & XBMC (plex) & FileStorage

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I just discovered this amazing forum and unRaid - and I would like to ask for your help.

I'm currently running an ~3 Year Old HP N36L with Win 7-OS. However I now have changed and upgraded requirements.

Details to current situation:

OS: Windows 7 running on 1 SSD without Backup and Raid

4x ~2 TB HDD, no Backup, no Raid, just FileStorage

Setup in an HP N36L, AMD Athlon Neo 1.3GHz, with 4 GB ECC RAM

Running only teamviewer for remote access from outside - and that's it.

Now I want to setup both a Jira & Confluence Server, I'm a big Atlassian Fan and want to convince my support team (& company) using it, so I need one private just for self-training and testing.

Therefore I want to have so more reliable setup as well as more system power, since in addition to those 2 tomcat servers I want again to start running a plex and twonky media server. (Private Use)

So I'm thinking of having 2-3 SSD in an unRaid configuration for those application & database servers.

In addition I want to keep my 4 HDD's without any backup or raid (just screencast and private stuff that doesn't need any backup).

Further requirements:

at least 1x USB 3, WOL, 2x Gb, Silent + power saving (as far as possible)

I think I want to get an Xeon E3 CPU or similar and suitable mainboard and at least 16 GB Ram to have smooth running those applications (and also upgrade possibility for the future)

However I couldn't think of any details and I'm not in to current hardware options and best value for price.

  • What is your budget?  Even if you don't have a strict budget set out, at least give us an idea if you are pinching pennies or splurging on your build.
    - 600 € (+/- 10%)
  • How many drives do you want your server to be able to support and how much capacity do you need?
    - 2-3 SSD in unRaid config for OS, Application server (at least 100 GB) and 4(upgrade able to 8) HDD without any un(raid)
  • Is expandability important to you?  If so, what's your long term goal?
    - Multiple virtual Enviroments, Upgrade HDD from 4 up to 8.
  • Are you interested in running any unRAID Add Ons (see here)?  If so, which ones?  Be specific.
-VMware Server on unRAID / ESXi
    -SNAP
    -Simple Features
    -UnMENU
    -FEMUR
    -Plex Media Server
  • Do you want to run green/low power drives or faster 7200 rpm drives?  If you don't have a specific need for 7200 rpm drives, then choose green drives.
-green - low power, except for OS (SSDs)
  • Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build?  This includes drives.
    -4x 2TB mixed
    -1x SSD PNY XLR8
  • If you already have parts in mind, please oh pretty please post links to them so that we don't have to look them up.

If you guys could give me some more recommendations they would be appreciated a lot.

Looking forward to your responds - thanks and best regards,

unRAID 6 (still beta but getting close) can be a VM Host, so VMware/ESXi is perhaps a needless complication.

Not sure I understand how you intend to use the drives. You say SSDs for the OS and HDDs not unRAID. This seems like some misconceptions about unRAID. The unRAID OS boots from a flash drive and runs entirely in memory. Having HDDs not in unRAID can be done but is also a needless complication unless you have some specific reason for it.

Maybe what you need is unRAID 6 with btrfs cache pool on SSD for your apps, and HDDs in unRAID with or without parity.

what I want is to have the SSD in parity for additional secure in case of any sdd fails,

for the HDDs i just would use them as mounted folder / disks.

for install on flash drive was clear for me.

any recommendation as for the hardware configuration?

#thanks
