Preclearing, how long does it take?

As disksizes increase the time to preclear a disk increases too.

How long does it take to preclear a 4 TB disk?

It depends on your hardware.  I would guess something like 35-40 hours for 1 full cycle may be typical.

Can I preclear 5 disks in the same time that it takes to preclear 1 disk?

There is no problem doing this on unRAID 6 if your hardware is up to it.  I do parallel pre-clears on unRAID v6 without problems. Not sure if unRAID v5 imposes limits due to the fact it is 32-bit.

Is 3 preclear runs on a new disk neccessary, or can I get away with 1 run?

None are strictly speaking necessary.  It all depends on what confidence level you want in your checking.

In my experience I had a drive or two fail on run 1 but I've had far more drives pass 2 runs only to fail on the run 3. I have never had a drive fail on run 4 or 5. Based on that personal experience I never run less than 3 runs.

Its all up to you if you preclear or not. It is a matter of preference, of how much luck you think you have and do you want to be made aware of issues before you trust the disk with your valuable data or is rolling the dice good enough for you.
