[SOLVED] USB HDD/Ran out of Sata Ports

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I'm all out of sata ports and the plan is to switch a 1TB to a 6TB drive.

Parity is already upgraded, and I was wondering if there was anyway to utilise my usb to sata cabling and hook up the new 6TB to the unraid box and preclear it prior to unhooking the old 1TB drive. I'm just thinking about saving myself a lot of downtime as that size drive takes a long time to preclear!

I'd hook it up now to test but it's in use for another day or so.

Cheers

You can pre-clear a USB connected drive.  You will be warned that SMART information is not available, and do you want to proceed.  If you continue then it goes ahead.  If you are using USB 3 then it tends to be of equivalent speed to direct SATA connection, and not unreasonably USB 2 is significantly slower.

Brilliant thank you! I've got 2 USB 3 ports so that's a huge plus to know that!

Thanks

Don't forget if you have some eSata ports, you can get an eSata to Sata cable and run that from the rear port to a drive mounted inside your chassis. Shows up as a regular sata drive in unRaid

I never thought of that! Time to slide it out and see if I have an eSATA port!

;D Currently running via a telnet/screen plugin....only had USB 2.0 so probably this time next week lol.

Nice about USB, but what's the sense of doing a preclear when you can't trace changes of SMART values?  ???
