runLoganrun
Hello unraid community, I've been reading up on Unraid, in general, and want to build a unraid server, it appears to be an excellent storage solution, and seems much easier, and safer, to expand, than raid. I looked around this site and saw a lot of posts, and it's probably been right in front of my face, but I can't seem to locate any type of guide or manual regarding installation or setup, or actual specs on what is needed. I need to get a better idea of the install process, but also need to know details like how many drives before I need another parity drive, etc. If this exists and I'm just not seeing it, can someone please point me in the right direction, or a close proximity? thanks a lot, rlr Link to comment
SSD
Welcome runLoganrun! There are several sources of information related to unRAID. These include the official unRAID documentation wiki, as well as a number of user-contributed wiki pages. The offical documentation does a pretty good job of explaining the install process. You can find it linked from the official webpage http://lime-technology.com/. On the user contributed side, follow the "Best of the Forums" link in my sig. There you will find a links to some of the more interesting forum posts. You'll find a Newbies section right at the top - a good place to start. There is also a link to the FAQ (wish my sig area were larger cause I'd like to link the FAQ directly from there). The FAQ contains many links to forum as well as other wiki pages. After taking a look, post back with any questions or requests for advice. You'll see that the forum community here is helpful and responsive if you've shown even the smallest effort to look at the available materials. BTW, there is no need to add more than one parity drive unless you create a second array. One array is currently limited to 15 data drives (+ parity). The max size depends on the size drives you use. RobJ
Another resource that may be helpful is the Getting Started with unRAID page. It is a rough outline of resource links for the various steps involved in understanding, designing, and implementing your own server. Link to comment
runLoganrun
Thanks guys! I'll prob be back in touch after I read up, and get started. I've got just about everything I need, I think. I've got a case, a really cheap case, which will get me going but will be an interim measure, right now I need to spend the least possible to bring it online, and I have a mobo that I need to get a new bios chip from asus for, a questionable opti 170 dual core or for a backup maybe a 2.0 single core athlon64, I wasn't sure if that one would cut it though. other stuff: ocz gold ddr500, 2x1G, a 500w antec HE, about 4TB of media. I think that the 500w psu should be sufficient for my immediate needs. I want to start with 5-6 1TB drives plus the parity, there won't be any power hungry gpu's or anything. rlr Link to comment

You should be fine with that PSU and if you have to the single core athlon64. unRAID really does not take a lot of juice to run. Antec makes pretty good ones and I run a Corsair that is around 540w with about 7 disks in the array plus my cache drive. Link to comment
SSD
I'm running 16 drives on 550watt "mad dog" (CompUSA brand) PSU. 6 are the WD GP drives. Link to comment

Hey Prostuff1, thanks man If everything goes well, I'll be able to order what I need next week, and put it together the following. I'm pretty stoked, I've been wanting a different storage setup for a while. talk soon, rlr Link to comment
