October 23, 201411 yr Hi. I just installed UnRaid onto my HP N36L Proliant Microserver. I have Windows 7 on one of the drives. I am a complete noob at this but I am willing to learn so please bare with me. First question...Is it possible to run UnRaid AND use Windows 7 on the server?
October 23, 201411 yr Hi there and welcome to unRaid. With version 5, you cannot run unRaid and any other OS simultaneously. unRaid is an operating system in and of itself. You can, of course, choose your boot device at startup and run either Win7 or unRaid but that kind of defeats the purpose. With unRaid version 6, virtualisation technology does allow you to run other operating systems as virtual machines 'on top' of unRaid. However, this is beta functionality and not currently as easy to utilise as it might be.

October 23, 201411 yr But, having one drive contain a Windows 7 installation will not work with unRAID. unRAID data drives cannot be partitioned. If you were to use VirtualBox you would still have to reinstall Win7.

If you were to use VirtualBox you would still have to reinstall Win7. This is incorrect. Windows can be installed on a drive in the server. This drive cannot be part of the unRAID array. Select either the Windows disk or the unRAID flash drive as the boot devise. In order to run Windows and unRAID concurrently, virtualization is required.
