Added New Hard Drive Please Help

Featured Replies

Hello everyone I added a new hard drive to my array making it 4 total 1 3TB Parity and the rest are all data drives 1-3 tb each. I am way to confused on how to do pre clears so I stopped the array did a safe shutdown then added the new data drive. I started the array and hit the check off box for " Start will record the new disk information and bring the expanded array on-line. All new disks which have not been factory-erased will be cleared first; and, the array will be available after the clear completes. This process takes time, but the array remains protected at all times. Caution: any data on the new disk(s) will be erased! If you want to preserve the data on the new disk(s), reset the array configuration and rebuild parity instead."

Since clicking that and hitting start the log seems like it is stuck in this loop stating the following:

Is this normal? I do understand it takes a while to add a drive this way without pre clearing it which I am ok with. Unless someone can show me an easy walk through to do a pre clear I will do that. My other question is shouldn't it show a format button soon or already show it before starting the array?

If you add a disk to a parity protected array without first pre-clearing it then your array is not available while unRAID itself does it.  I would guess this could take up to something like 10 hours for a 3TB drives.  Only when that has finished will you be offered the option to format the disk (which then only takes a minute or so)..

Ok so this looks normal considering the way I have done it without doing the pre clear?

Yes ... it's simply zeroing the drive, which, as already noted, can take a LONG time for a 3TB drive.  I'd estimate 8-10 hours.
