March 4, 201016 yr I use VLC Player and Media Player Classic under Windows 7, their both top media players and very flexible, heaps of Codec support and best of all, their free.
March 24, 201016 yr Boxee (beta) on an Acer Revo 1600 jacked up with 2GB of RAMS running windows 7 Will upgrade to a Revo 3610 for my main viewing area at some point unless a better hardware/pricepoint comes along.
March 24, 201016 yr Around last Christmas I bought a BriteView CinemaTube device. CinemaTube connects either by wired or wireless network and can even go on the internet to play movies. It's a simple cheap device and it's the whole reason I went searching for something to host movie files on. I'm burning the ISO's onto unRAID and CinemaTube can browse (via remote) the ISO's and other media and play it at 1080 to a TV or other HDMI connected device. http://www.brite-view.com/cinematube.php
March 25, 201016 yr What do you think of the CinemaTube? I got the wdtv live, and I'm a little disappointed. Its advertised as playing vob's, but the problem is that it doesn't understand a dvd menu structure or vob structure for that matter. I have many movies ripped as vob's, but it isn't smart enough to play a movie. It just plays the vobs in alphabetical order, so when it switches from one to the other, it gets confused. Worse than useless, as I am now presented with the option of re-encoding my entire library to mkv. The other problem is tha my tv episodes can't be played. I'm not pulling down torrents, but my own purchased dvd's of different seasons of the simpsons, etc. can't be played because it can't figure out the menu to select a particular episode from a dvd. So, in this case, I have to re-rip the dvd's of my tv shows but I have to pull out the different episodes to their own files. UGH!!!! So, what do you think of the CinemaTube? Would it solve my problems? Sorry if I'm a little off topic, but I figure at this point that this thread is so old that I'm not really 'hijacking' anything. Thanks, Chris
March 25, 201016 yr Well, I'm ripping the whole DVD with menues, subtitles and whatever and CinemaTube presents it like a DVD does playing previews and trailers. Or sometimes I rip the DVD with just the main movie. That works great. If I stop the movie it remembers where to resume - for each movie, not just the last one played. I like that. I looked at the cost of setting up a dedicated machine and decided to try this instead.

It's free. in fact you can boot it from the livecd to test it and if you like it, install it. I installed it on one of the atom/nvidia ion platforms with a 30GB SSD. I'm very happy. From power button to usability in 20 seconds.
March 25, 201016 yr I'm actually using XBMC on the computer in the basement (where the main 'home theater' is located). This is for our bedroom. Small footprint and cheap are two main req's ($100 for the wdtv live). I can't really swing buying another computer to put in the closet...
March 26, 201016 yr Check the link in my sig. You can run XBMC on a $200 Revo, which is very small (slightly larger than a standard router, smaller than an Xbox 360). I think it is even VESA mountable, though I haven't tried it myself.
March 28, 201016 yr I will not be using a "media center" at all. Instead I will be using a Xtreamer which to me is the better of the media streamers... only because it allows folder locking.
March 28, 201016 yr What do you mean by 'folder locking'? I'm also looking at the xstreamer. Its downside is that it doesn't have component video, but it looks like it should do a decent job of displaying movie info (see its 'movie jukebox': http://www.xtreamer.net/xtreamer/features/movie-juke-box.aspx ) I'm trying to figure out what media players are capable of dealing with movies that are ripped as 'vobs'. The xstreamer can handle 'iso' files, so it seems that it is smart enough to deal with a dvd menu, but I'm trying to figure out what player will require me to either re-rip or re-encode most of my library. Thanks, Chris

April 1, 201016 yr Cinemar's DVDLobby! An hp Touchsmart or Samsung Q1 as a remote, Powerdvd to play em, and deamon tools lite to mount the iso's.
June 17, 201016 yr XBMC - AsRock ION 330 Living Room - BigScreen XBMC - XP SP3 Office - 26" LCD TV XBMC - Xbox Guest room - 27" TV XBMC - XP SP3 (2) Laptops floating around the house - 15" or so screens XBMC - Xbox sitting in closet because I killed it. I have a thing for XBMC as you can tell. I've tinkered with Boxee, Meebos or whatever it was called and a few others, but honestly I guess I just couldn't be swayed.
June 19, 201016 yr Popcorn Hour A100 Popcorn Hour A110 (5) Orig Xbox running XBMC scattered around the house.
June 24, 201016 yr Plex on my Hackintosh ION Netbook for the bedroom, XBMCbuntu on my Livingroom Frontend, and Air Video for my iPhone.
November 7, 201015 yr GBPVR (http://www.gbpvr.com/) - My Favorite, i have tried xbmc and have had hassles trying to understand the menu concept to the remote unlike GBPVR which is just straight forward
November 7, 201015 yr My Movies 3.x server/client on Win 7 x64 HTPC (31TB storage). Another Win 7 x64 running the client in the bedroom.
November 7, 201015 yr I'm using a Dvico Tvix 6600. I think my next media player will be XBMC. Or maybe Plex. I thought the Plex developers also wanted to develop a Linux backend. Would be great if we can run this onto a unRAID server.
