how bad is my drive

Featured Replies

i have a seagate 1.5tb drive that i had in a windows machine for a little over 2 years but started to lock up so i thought i would try and use it for unraid. I have tried to get my files and stuff off of the drive but locks up the computer soild untell i unplug the drive.

1. how bad is this drive?

2. should i preclear and see if it clears up?

smartctl.txt

General rule of thumb.

If it doesn't work reliably with windows, don't use it for unRAID!

That being said, if you have ANY Pending sectors or high reallocated counts or FAILING NOW attributes.

DO NOT USE IT FOR UNRAID!

I'm sorry to say, get your data off it as fast as you can, use dd rescue if you have to.

When you are done, erase it with badblocks and recycle it or trash it.

thank you weebo it took me a bit just to get that smart report  new learning curve with cmd line stuff  as for my data i finaly did get the data i wanted off the drive pics music and movies.  it was my data repo for my 2 xmbc's i curently have  thats why im learning unraid.  i was just hoping to try and save some money if i could have reused this drive. I just wanted to make sure it was toast.  ;D

thank you agine weebo

I just wanted to make sure it was toast.  ;D

It's toasty! In fact I would say it's burnt!

Get the fire department!

I wouldn't trust any data on that drive.

You could attempt to erase it with badblocks and/or spin rite to recover some sectors.

But in that case, maybe a cache drive, never an array drive.

If the drive were in my possession, I would scrap it.

ya its scraped when i unhooked it it was very hot and i had a fan under it for cooling as for that data i got i made sure i checked them all to be sure no issues and their was no data courption all good thier.

If you got your data off, you got everything that drive was going to do, 3.27 years of power on from what is certainly a top 10 of reported bad drives. Most did not last that long and many were not able to copy data off.

the strange thing is it didn't affect my os drive that I got my programs and games on but it would lock my computer up and have to do a hard reboot.  both drives where bought at the same time.  very strange  :o

the media was backed up before we swap the hard drive out.  should i run a preclear pass on it or just scrap it like i did with the other one?

my scraping was a 30-06 and a .5lb exploding tagert  lol was very fun

It's not worth putting important data on.

You can attempt to preclear, but it says FAILING NOW.

It's almost 3 years with some high numbers in the failing categories.

You can attempt to salvage it with spinrite, but I wouldn't put anything too important on it.

I wouldn't use it, I would erase it with DBAN or badblocks/spinrite and perhaps sell these bad drives off to a place that can recycle the parts.

know of any? I have plenty of parts to get rid of

The place I used to send them to, does not exist in that capacity any more. I do not know of any others at the current moment.
