November 11, 201411 yr I have been running an unraid server for the last 5yrs or so with 10 2TB drives (upgraded over time). I'm using 2 Icy Dock 5in3 cages. I removed the fans off of them and replaced them with silent fans. I've reached the end of the line with drive space as my drives are all full and I have no room to add more. I now have a choice on upgrading. I can either upgrade all my drives to 3TB drives or build a new system. If I replace my drives with 3TB drives, then I have a whole bunch of drives just sitting around. So I figured I might as well rebuild. Problem is I need some help with the motherboard. I need one that can handle 15 drives, I have room to add one more Icy Dock drive cage and plan to do just that. I already have one SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 so will need another. So the motherboard has to handle 2 SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards...I'm assuming that hasn't changed and they don't need to be upgraded... The other important feature is being able to put it to sleep and restart when the drives are accessed. Would anyone be kind enough to suggest some MB to look at? I would prefer mATX if possible.
November 11, 201411 yr Honestly, if you haven't already, run a cost analysis of slowly replacing the 2TB drives with 4TB drives vs the cost of a new system with a few extra 2TB drives.
November 11, 201411 yr Author The problem is I then have 10 2TB drives lying around. Right now I can get a 4TB drive for $180 with taxes. So after 3 or 4 drives I'd be about even in cost I think.
November 12, 201411 yr I think you're looking at double the cost to build a new system to support 15 drives and filling the new slots.
November 12, 201411 yr Author The cost would be the new mb, ram, cpu, cpu cooler, SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 card, and the Icy Dock. I already have everything else plus two 2TB drives lying around that I would like to use up. Any recommendations for a mb?
