dluusional
Hello, I'm new here and I'm starting to think about building my first server. Anyone have any thoughts on either of these motherboards, I know the X9SCL-F is older, but is it worth the $100 extra for the X10SCL? http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C202_C204/X9SCL-F.cfm http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C220/X10SL7-F.cfm As I'm still new to the server world, my primary usage will be file storage and 1 plex media stream either transcoding or streaming, I can either hook it up to my samsung smart tv and plex app or stream via my HTPC powered by windows. Budget, looking to spend as little as possible but I'd also like a good quality system. I'm recycling my PSU (800W) and case already, so just looking at CPU, MB, RAM. Thank you. Link to comment
mr-hexen
the *main* difference is SATA ports. the X9 has 6, where as the X10 has 14. How many drives were you planning on running? Link to comment
dluusional
Thanks for the fast response, I *think* 5 drives would be enough, and then later on get a sas/raid controller later on if need be. my thinking is getting a 6 tb now and pair that up with my current 2x2tb and then upgrade the 2tb's along the way. what do you think? dikkiedirk
I would opt for a X9SCL-F or X9SCM-F and add a couple of M1015 or SA2LP controllers. Even if the X9 series is "older". The -F option adds IPMI which is very sweet. Link to comment

ootuoyetahi
These boards dont have video cards correct? Do you NEED a video card to boot or will the run without it? Link to comment
BetaQuasi
They have on board video, just a very simple chip. Enough to run a screen off. Link to comment
