December 1, 200619 yr I need a better understanding of Unraid for future reference. I turned on my server to add some additional files (for the first time), and had to stop parity check before I could do this. This got me to thinking: Questions: 1 Is this a good idea? 2. Does a parity check start automatically when new files are added? 3. Is the parity check done to all files, or is it incremental only? For example, I change a tag in an mp3 file.

Parity check is not triggered merely by adding/changing files. Probably what happened here was that previously you powered off the system before clicking the "Stop" button on the Management Utility. When this happens, the system will automatically start a parity check next time you power up. 1. If your system was idle, e.g., all drive were spun down, before power-off, then yes it's probably ok to cancel. 2. Other than the case just described, the only other way to start parity-check is to click the "Check" button. 3. Parity generation/check takes place at the disk block level, independent of the file system.
