December 7, 201411 yr I use an Areca controller, which like some other high-end controllers requires special switches for smartctl. Also hdparm simply won't work on the Areca for most purposes. (You can get power status from smartctl now however) I've tracked down the sluggish behavior on my system to zombie smartctl/hdparm processes. All the useful SMART diags in Dynamix are also useless. In the interim, I'm renaming smartctl and hdparm so they can't be called by emhttp/Dynamix. But then the drives not on the Areca controller can't be polled. It would be much more useful if, on a per-drive basis, there was a way for the user to customize the default commands for polling disk temps, spin up, down, reading status, etc. A checkbox to indicate the drive will report SMART when spun down (so use -nocheck=never switch) would also be good.
