My array just won't start

Featured Replies

I'm putting together a new unRAID server and right now it just refuses to start the array.  Every time I push the start button the screen refreshes but it stays stopped and there's absolutely no indication of any kind of error.  This has happened to me a lot.

When I first started working with unRAID a few weeks ago I built a test system with 5.x and 3 drives just to see how the speeds would be and how my new hardware was working.  Once I was satisfied everything was in working order I purchased a license and decided to go with unRAID 6.0beta12.  Since my initial configuration was just for testing I didn't worry about upgrading, instead I wiped the USB drive and loaded it up.  Upon booting the computer with all the drives connected I attempted to build the array, but it wouldn't start.  So I figured it wasn't liking the old data on the drives and so I started to run preclear on the drives.  After the first two drives were done I tried to build an array with one drive and one parity drive, but it wouldn't start.  After the third drive was done I tried again, and this time after about 50 attempts to start the array, it started.  I don't know why, it just refused to start and then one time it started, and it seemed fine.  After the fourth drive was done I stopped the array, added the last drive as well as the cache drive, and now it won't start.

The Dashboard shows all the drives, with Data 3 having a blue dot in Unassigned.  When I go to main I see green on Parity, Disk 1, Disk 2, and Disk 3 is blue and has a 0 size, since it hasn't been formatted yet.  Cache device is green.  On the Array Operation page it shows "Found one new erased disk" and correctly identifies the disk.  I check "Yes I want to do this", click Start, and it refreshes and it's not started.  I rebooted and it came back up stopped and the new disk was not in the array.  So I added it and I get the same behavior.

Is there some magic sequence I have to go through just to start the array?  This seems like it should be the most basic operation, and if it fails to start there has to be some notification and a reason why this happened.  But there is nothing I can find.  Here's the log since the reboot:

It's normally a basic operation, and should just start up if nothing's wrong.  In the case above, it did not find a valid license file ("emhttp: Unregistered"), so it's either not installed in the config folder on this flash drive or it's not valid for this flash drive (or perhaps has become corrupted?).  You were able previously to add a third drive, but now, when unregistered, it only allows 2 data drives.

Well that did it, thanks.  I'm certain I put the file in there before but then it was gone.  I figured if it was a license issue there'd be an actual error on the web page.  Or perhaps like with 5.0 you wouldn't even be allowed to create an array that was not permitted within the scope of your license.  I had problems with fewer drives also, but that may have been triggered by me adding a cache drive, again something that's not supposed to be allowed without a license.  And I saw the error with emhttp, but I figured that's a web server service and I never would have guessed that had something to do with the unRAID license.

I realize that this is a beta, but this is basic stuff, and it's functionality that was correctly implemented in 5.0.6.

Whew, I'm new to unRAID and this thread just made my weekend.  I was starting to go crazy trying to get my 4th drive added.

It let me add the cache drive without problem (unregistered), and I wasn't getting any indication that I was not running in 'Plus' mode...  it let me assign the 4th drive, and pre-clear the drive.  But when it came time to start the array, it wouldn't start.  It just said i have a new disk that is unformatted with no option to format it.  After finding this thread I checked my Thumb drive and noticed I put the key in the wrong folder (DOH).  Putting it in the right folder and restarting did the trick and everything is good now, so thanks for the help!  (And thank god i didn't have to pre-clear the drive again).

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one and I'm glad that my issue helped resolve yours.

I bought two keys and I have a second USB drive ready to go.  I'm thinking about popping that in my system without the registration key and see if it allows me to add too many drives also.  I'm curious if something happened where my key was there for the initial configuration, but then something happened to the key which mangled the config.
