April 15, 200917 yr Greetings, I've recently moved to a rural community where the power isn't as consistent as a major city. So an UPS is now a definite requirement. I have read that APC UPS are the go because they can be tied to a powerdown script etc. This is still to be achieved on my setup. Here is the UPS I was going to get http://ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=117780 Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. As I setup my unRAID server through sheer determination and NOT skill, I still feel really nervous making changes to a system that overall has been very stable and reliable. I am currently running version 4.3.3 with 16 drives. I'll be looking forward to more direction when I have a unit on hand. Thx.
April 19, 200917 yr That is a good UPS, but there MUST be a better price!!! Is that U.S. dollars? Caution in upgrading is almost always a Good Thing. I can say however, I don't believe there have been any significant issues with the latest releases, that affect the integrity of your data.
April 19, 200917 yr Author Thx Rob for the comment. The price is in $NZ. Unfortunately, that's pretty much the best price I've seen within a few $. I only buy from online computer stores that have a real store - too many fly-by-nighters - so sometimes the price is somewhat higher. I'm planning to get this next week (had another power cut today). Then I'll need some help to get it functioning correctly
April 19, 200917 yr A pretty good rule of thumb is buy APC and don't look any further. Another good rule of thumb is check the price and availability of replacement batteries. for the specific model your looking to buy...not all APC batteries are the same cost, especially odd shaped ones. Once you get those questions out the way, consider the weight of these things and their end location. Then consider connectivity, i.e. kettle cables, USB and or serial. Note I have made no mention of backup times and kVA ratings. Theres no mad science here just uptime and real power consumption to consider. In the last 2 weeks I have had 2 power cuts (big ones). My APC UPSs apart from beeping manically at me worked perfectly as they always do.
April 19, 200917 yr Author Replacement battery price is a good point. How long does a battery last?? About 2-3 years? The same company does sell replacement batteries for this unit ($300NZ+) and this unit will take an extra battery to extend backup time. The connection is USB (and serial) I believe. One thing I'd like to ask is about the plugs on the back. Seems you need a puter type lead with a???(Not sure the name of the plug type) connection. Hopefully one of these will come as part of the package. Thx for the reply.
April 20, 200917 yr Author Received my new UPS this morning. Will start a new thread for setting it up once I've read up and the process and the UPS is charged.
