April 16, 200917 yr Guys, Sorry, I ran through a heap of posts on this topic but I still can't seem to correct the problem. I have 2 vista PC's (X64) and a basic unraid server. One of the vista boxes see's the unraid server no problems 9shows tower in network places, can access disks, shares etc etc0. The other vista box doesn't show the unraid box, but i can access the GUI from the box but can't see the disks/shares. I know this isn't a unraid questions but I must be missing something and I can't figure out what. I've checked that the workgroups are the same and have also tested shutting down firewalls, but I would think that if i can get the GUI up then it must be a vista setting. Sorry for being a moron but I'm so damn close! thx, PK
April 16, 200917 yr Easiest way to figure it out would be a "stare-and-compare" of the settings of the two vista machines to determine the difference... of course, that "might" take a while, especially if you just compare registry settings Do they have the same patches? were they applied in the same order? Are they using the exact USER same ID's ?(in case they are logging into the unRAID server) One might be the master-browser for the network... perhaps it is not talking to the other? (I know, I've not been too much help... but I'm a UNIX Geek... not a Micro$oft expert.)
April 16, 200917 yr Author Hi, Thanks for the advice, I've tried the stare and compare (i love that terminology) and can't seem to find anything different. It is really frustrating as everything points to this being a user permissions/access issue and I can't seem to see where the fault lies. The fact that I can get the GUI up demonstrates its not a fire wall issue and the virus protection software even see's "tower" when I request a network map, but vista doesn't show tower when its requested for a map. not sure where to look in the registry to compare between the 2 PC's - any ideas anyone? Ironically both boxes are fresh installs, as I've just done musical motherboards so I could give unraid a try, so the only difference I can think of was the loading sequence/update of programs. Any help would be appreciated guys. PK
April 16, 200917 yr This is a little odd as "Tower" should show up in network places for both systems. When you type "\\tower" into the run box and hit enter, do you see any of the shares? Does it prompt you for a username and password? Can you get to "\\tower\flash"? I have seen similar odd behavior from unRAID and Windows while using the User security. Do you have user security turned on in unRAID? Do you have a password set for root or any other users defined? Any anti-virus software that may be doing extra firewall protection on the system? How about trying to boot to safe mode with networking, can you see the shares. Those a few things to look at first. Hopefully one of them will tell us a little more about what is happening.
April 16, 200917 yr Author Hi, Using the run command I can see all the shares/disks and even use the small amount of data that I have moved across onto the server. I have no user names or passwords set up in unraid as I'm still toying with the basic version. I've tried shutting down virus protection/firewalls on both boxes and the behaviour remains (ie. one can see the tower perfectly and the other can't at all but can get the GUI and can navigate to the directories through the run cmd.). I am at my wits end, am wondering whether I just blow the OS away again and start from a clean slate. very frustrating. thx for the help!
April 16, 200917 yr Hi, Thanks for the advice, I've tried the stare and compare (i love that terminology) It is a technical term, common in the industry... The fact that I can get the GUI up demonstrates its not a fire wall issue. Network shares use entirely different ports than web-pages. It could easily be the firewall. Computer Browser The Computer Browser system service maintains an up-to-date list of computers on your network and supplies the list to programs that request it. The Computer Browser service is used by Windows-based computers to view network domains and resources. Computers that are designated as browsers maintain browse lists that contain all shared resources that are used on the network. Earlier versions of Windows programs, such as My Network Places, the net view command, and Windows Explorer, all require browsing capability. For example, when you open My Network Places on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows, a list of domains and computers appears. To display this list, the computer obtains a copy of the browse list from a computer that is designated as a browser. System service name: Browser Application protocol Protocol Ports NetBIOS Datagram Service UDP 138 NetBIOS Name Resolution UDP 137 NetBIOS Session Service TCP 139 SMB TCP 445 Ironically both boxes are fresh installs, as I've just done musical motherboards so I could give unraid a try, so the only difference I can think of was the loading sequence/update of programs. Any help would be appreciated guys. PK The problem with the computer that cannot see the unRAID server could be with the one that does see it, and does not share that it knows about it.

So, you are able to see the shares if you type in the names, but not navigate through "My Network Places"? How about just mapping a drive to the shares you want, will that work for you? This really sounds like a Windows problem and there may be other forums that can offer better Vista advice than here. I would start with updating the network driver, double check any firewall settings. After that I would start running a bunch of command line stuff like netstat, nslookup, double check your hosts file, etc. Another thought - what is the Workgroup name the 2 systems are a part of? and what is the Workgroup name of unRAID set to? Are they all the same and in the same upper/lower case? Are the 2 PC's able to see each other in My Network Places?
