HP Microserver Gen8 as unRAID server - experiences sought

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've been running a small unRAID server on a HP Microserver Gen 7. Very happy with it and unRAID, but am looking for improved performance and am tempted by the current offers on a Gen 8 Microserver.

Is anyone running a Gen 8, preferably with v.6 (using v.5 on my gen 7, but thinking of taking the opportunity to upgrade).

Simply requirements - NAS plus Plex mainly.

Found a few threads via search, but nothing recent.

My experience with the HP Microserver Gen 8

I run ESX with unRAID 5.0.6. I haven't run unRAID6 Beta on it yet as it's my main repository.

It's nice. I happen to like the Gen7 as far as drive expand-ability. That top bay comes in handy.

I hate the drive carriers/frames for the GEN 8, They are flimsy.

The PCI slot is easier to get to, but you loose one also.

As far as ESX performance, there's something to be said about the XEON 1220L (I know the most expensive one) and the increased cache.

Which was my main impetus to move in that direction.

I'll probably swap in an E3-1260L when I can score one at a fair price.

Thanks - useful info.

At current Gen8 prices I think this is the way to go over a self-build.
