Plex MS in a Standalone machine and media on unraid

Featured Replies

So i have openVPN on and running on Unraid along with plex, and cant figure out how to leave plex open for sharing with this scenario. Unless you experts can point me in the right direction :)

I have a dual core box just sitting around here and considering putting PMS as a standalone on this machine. Perhaps in Ubuntu, or maybe even unraid, doesn't matter.

How do you all suggest I connect these machine from a file/share standpoint? I am on a gigabit network.. Anything I should consider before doing this?

leave plex open for sharing with this scenario.

I was reading your post I did not understand what the above meant - So I shall try and guess. I assume you have Plex and OpenVPN running on your Unraid box (via a PLG or via Docker I guess). I also assume you have shares setup in Unraid and have them exported using either SMB or NFS. If that is the case then it should be a simple case of adding the share to Plex. See here: https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/135447-adding-unraid-network-share-to-pms/

By the by, I find I get better performance and reliability using NFS over SMB in XBMC not sure if it is the same in Plex.

Glad I could help a little.

I don't think that you will need anything in that link at all. When you add a share you are asked how you want to export it and NFS should be an option.

As for adding the share to Plex (and here is where I am not sure because I don't use it) but I would assume there is an option in the Plex interface to select NFS shares as an source. Certainly there is in XBMC. E.g. in XBMC I do this:

Add Files

Select Source as NFS Shares

*Discoverable NFS Shares on my network are displayed in a list of which the Unraid ones I have setup are there*

Select the appropriate folder in the share

Click OK

Like I said above, given Plex is more of a "commercial" piece of software I have to assume they have a way in their interface for easily selecting an NFS source. Maybe they even make it transparent to the user.
