These are not 5TB WD REDs, they are 5.6TB.

That brings them in at just over $30 per T at the $169 price.

A search for 5.6T drives brings up only one that was ever announced - an HGST 5.6TB Helium filled drive.

Is that what these are? I am not sure. But seems very possible. If anyone has any ideas how to tell, please let me know.

Mine are preclearing away.

If the firmware is still stock and not customized, smartctl should tell you the actual manufacturer and model #

Here is the smart report ...

I couldn't find any clues except the firmware resembles WD naming.

For comparison purposes.

If someone could check some WD drive models for conveyance test support.

The configuration of the circular stickers are just like the WD REDs. The little screws in the corners look a little different but basically in the same places.

Definitely not a flat top like the HGST HelioSeal pictured, and also not like the pictures of HGST non-helium 5T drive I found elsewhere. And not like Seagate.

The scant drive info on Newegg for the drive says it has the features "Data Lifeguard, Shock Guard", which are WD terms.

But I suppose it is possible that the platters themselves might be HGST platters.

I wonder if HGST made a bunch of the lower density 7 platter 5.6TB assemblies, and it didn't make sense to make them into Helios with the 6T and higher capacities that are coming, so WD took them, fitted them with Red 5700RPM motors, and pushed them out the door on the wholesale market.

One thing of note, these drives DO have all three screw holes on each side. I know at least some 7 platter drives don't have the middle screw to squeeze in all of the platters.

If not 7x800G platters, what other platter configuration gets to 5.6TB?

Ive seen some really odd ones coming from WD for use in dells and microsoft consoles.  Its possible that one side of the last platter is not in use and disabled.

If that is the case they could be 6 platter using 5.5 platters.  My HGST 6tb has 6 screw holes.  As far as i know HGST never came out with the 5.6tb, and went with HE6 and HE8 for 6-8tb.

Hmm...

6 800gig platters is 4800

6 1tb platters is 6 tb

5.5 1tb platters is 5.5tb unless its fuzzy math

7 800gig platters is 5.6tb, if they are using black magic to keep the center mount holes.

If you look at the picture of the PCB board on Newegg, I get 2060-800001-000 REV P1.  Google turns up references associating that with 6TB Greens, specifically the WD60EZRX-00MVLB1.

While I am sure WD, like every other mfg, uses common parts when they can, the drives look the same.  Up to the same letters "3B1" stamped into the metal at the top of the drive.

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5AD2ER7851

Also the smart report posted earlier points that this drive started life as a higher capacity drive than advertised.

User Capacity:    5,601,346,781,184 bytes [5.60 TB]

EDIT:

With an oddball capacity size, they could also taken drives, both Red/Green that had to many bad sectors and could not be sold as 6TB drives and hard mapped out the bad sectors and sold them to New Egg for sell as 5TB drives.  They would recoup their cost, New Egg gets sales they possibly would not have and the customer gets a "larger capacity drive" than they thought they had purchased.  Everybody wins.  This would be similar to the way AMD sold their 4 core CPUs with a a bad core as three core CPUs.

I don't see where you got the "2060-800001-000 REV P1" designation from (I can't see it on any of the Newegg pictures) ... but assuming it's accurate, it certainly matches a WD Green 6TB unit.    And the pictures of the two drives look VERY similar (the cases aren't identical, but are certainly very close.

As for the capacity -- assuming this is indeed a re-badged 6TB WD Green -- there are several possibilities:

(a)  They may have simply not utilized the full capacity of the platters ... or perhaps assigned significantly more spare sectors than normal (perhaps due to the original OEM requirements for the drives).

(b)  They may be built using platters that failed initial testing, so were formatted with the failed areas mapped ... and marketed as 5TB so anything >= 5TB of good space would be okay.

©  They may simply be 933GB platters that were an intermediate step along the way to 1TB platters.  There have been other "oddball" platter sizes along the way to the current areal densities.

The similarity to the 6TB WD Greens may simply be because they used the same physical casing for these drives.

If you save the picture from New Egg that shows the PCB open it in a viewer, and rotate the picture clockwise, zoom in and you can see more detail.  Here is the area showing the base PCB P/N.

I can confirm this is correct. The sticker is different. Mine says "mediamax".

Mediamax is an authorised Service Partner of Wester Digital. The Western Digital Hard Drives were professionally and generally repaired by Mediamax own brand and represented at the market. We are not dealing with No Name hard drives, but with generally repaired Western Digital HDD. Visually and technically HDDs looking like new, all HDDs aresealed in an antistatic tape.

That's not the only non OEM assembler of disk drives. To see such quantity of these so soon is a bit surprising.
