Mediamax is an authorised Service Partner of Wester Digital. The Western Digital Hard Drives were professionally and generally repaired by Mediamax own brand and represented at the market. We are not dealing with No Name hard drives, but with generally repaired Western Digital HDD. Visually and technically HDDs looking like new, all HDDs aresealed in an antistatic tape.

That's not the only non OEM assembler of disk drives. To see such quantity of these so soon is a bit surprising.

Seems like Western Digital had a MFT (metric ton) of failures in the 6TB drives area that had to be handled in the secondary market. Maybe it was something with the physical platters that made them unusable as 6TB units but mostly-usable at lower capacities.

According to the item description ...

This is a White Label 5TB SATA hard drive featuring with 5700RPM, 64MB cache SATA 6.0GB/s 3.5" Desktop hard drive with 1 year warranty. A white label product is a product made by major hard drive company that manufactured for other companies (OEM Hard Drive Reseller/VAR) re-brand to make it appear as if they made it or for large volume special application.

This did not sound like a repaired disk.

Of the 4 I bought, only one is still showing no reallocated sectors heading into the second round.

Interesting discrepancy between the Newegg description ["... This is a White Label 5TB SATA hard drive featuring with 5700RPM, 64MB cache SATA 6.0GB/s 3.5" Desktop hard drive with 1 year warranty. I wonder if WD simply had a large number of platter failures in 6TB drives, so instead of using the rest of that batch of platters they sent them to MediaMax to produce the "WL" drives using less than the full capacity of the platters.    These wouldn't be "repaired" drives ... so the description on Newegg's site would be accurate (if a bit misleading, since the "large volume special application" they were made for was to simply sell them to consumers to use up the less-than-perfect platters).

Is it only me that's concerned that the whole 'helium-filled' concept isn't a viable long-term construction method?  I worry these drives won't be sealed well enough to contain helium for years.  Granted, I'm basing that on science knowledge that's decades old, but I [do] know it's at the top of the periodic chart.  And I know I've seen a lot of fogged windows in my day- all of which, started out life sealed with a warranty a LOT longer than any hard drive's.  Am I the only one whose OCD snags on that suspicion?

No, I've had the same concerns as you.

However, these particular drives are probably not helium filled.

I agree that these drives are not likely helium-filled.

But as for helium-filled drives having a sealing issue ... anything's possible; but I suspect these are VERY well sealed and are unlikely to develop leakage over time.  Like you, I've seen sealed multi-pane windows develop leaks that result in fogging (I've replaced quite a few of those over the years) ... but a hard drive isn't installed in a position where it's exposed to direct sunlight; isn't subjected to significant temperature and humidity variances as the weather and season changes; and doesn't have one side exposed to the outside temperature and the other exposed to an indoor temperature (in Winter this could easily be a 50 degree variance).

Helium (or any other gas) won't pass through mylar, but it can easily pass through the "sealed" neck, as these aren't hermetically sealed.  The seals in the HGST helium filled disks are in fact the "breakthrough" that allows this technology to work.      Hitachi patented this sealing technology, which they refer to as " HelioSeal™ hermetic seal technology" -- which they claim not only eliminates any loss of the gas from the drive, but is durable enough to use the drives in liquid immersion cooling systems.

While this could, of course, just be marketing "hype", I suspect this technology works as advertised -- the drives seem to be working very well, with no significant reports of failures or other issues.  I like to see a longer warranty than the 3 years they provide, but even 3 years is a fairly good warranty for drives these days.

Second round ended with all 4 drives experiencing reallocated sectors ranging from 2 events/39 reallocated sectors to 16 events/315 reallocated sectors. Company being very easy on the return. Free shipping and 100% refund.

No regrets. Nothing lost. It could have been the deal of the decade!

I just precleared one of these drives using Joe L's script. I found this thread while trying to decide whether or not I should worry about the HPA on this drive. I have decided that I should just ignore HPA, and that the warning is due to the odd size of the drive.  Do you guys have any thoughts on this?

I am attaching my preclear report only because I seem to have been lucky enough to have bought a drive that is not failing. Somewhat sorry for the necro post.  :P

Results of the pre-clear look good ... it indeed looks like you got a drive without any issues.

Given the time that's elapsed since the Brian's experiences, the issues may have been resolved with a new batch of these drives.    One drive isn't enough of a sample to confirm that, but it's nevertheless encouraging.    Where/when did you buy your drive?

I bought mine at newegg on 1/17/15, the same day as the first post in this thread. I probably saw bjp999's original post and jumped on the deal. I set it next to my server and never touched it until last weekend. bjp999's serial number as shown in This post

was WOL24028xxxx, mine is Serial Number: WOL240288135

I think I got VERY lucky...
