May 2, 200917 yr I was adding 2 more disks to my unRAID configuration after running a preclear against them, but just after assinging the devices and hitting start, I noticed the 2 disks were 1056 bytes short - i.e. HPA enabled. Unfortunately I had already hit start which recorded the drives to the configuration. I then shut down the server, disabled HPA by running a Windows utility against them and plugged them back in the unRAID system. As expected unRAID does not like them now and I am hesitant to press Start without consulting a few of the experts here. Below is a screenshot of the configuration I have: Am I safe to hit "I'm sure I want to do this" and press Start? I assume I do not want to use restore, correct?
May 2, 200917 yr It is safe to check the checkbox under "Start" and then press it. It would be equally safe to check the checkbox under "Restore" and press it, but as soon as yo do you will start the process of calculating parity on your entire array as if it was new. Your data would be safe, but the parity disk is immediately invalidated and you would be without parity protection until the process completed. You could however use the "Trust-my-Parity" procedure as described in the wiki. Joe L.

I checked the checkbox and hit start and everything looked OK, but the 2 drives I was trying to add (Disk 5 and Disk 6) are showing up as unformatted as they should; however I am not able to successfully format them. I have attached the syslog (zipped) for you to take a look at. When trying to format the disks, it adds an error count to the disk 5 and disk 6 columns, then goes straight back to "unformatted", with a message saying "unformatted disks present. Now, I ran the preclear script against the drive when HPA was enabled, could this have caused the problem in that the drive is now slightly larger? How can I fix this and format the drives to start using them? There is no data on disks 5 and 6, but lots of data on 1-4.

I resolved my issue above by putting the 2 drives into another unRAID system and re-running the preclear script. I was then able to transfer them back to the production server and Format them successfully in unRAID.
