Could this cheap Intel server be of any use to us unRAIDers?

It has all manner of PCI-e and PCI-X slots, space for up to 15 HDDs (with optional backplanes) and has onboard video.

A 750GB SATA drive is included too.

My only gripe is that it's a single core Xeon processor, which will probably use a lot of power. I'd be interested to hear thoughts on the server's use with unRAID and whether a lower power CPU could be substituted into the mobo.

Might be an interesting solution for those who don't want to get their hands dirty with a build. Don't know how you got to 15 drives though.

The server is wider than a conventional 5.25" slot. Intel makes a backplane that houses Six 3.5 in drives vertically in the bottom section. The next section up is able to house four drives vertically, and a regular 5in3 backplane goes at the top. On researching stuff about the server, I came across a pic of one configured this way. The only snag is whether the thing will boot off USB.

A base system that is available internationally at this kind of price is an exceptional idea IMHO.

Thanks ! For some reasons, I had not realized one could put 6  drives at the bottom.

Can you post the pic?

I'm sure it will boot of USB. Anyone have links to the motherboard specifics?

It might be possible to change out the xeon cpu with a LV xeon saving some heat and electricity.

With one of my builds, I replaced a 900mhz Pentium with a dual LV xeon setup and it used the same amount of electricity while idle.

I'll see if I can find the pic again. I was looking for it again yesterday and all I could fine was a tiny image; all the top Google hits for the server changed within a few hours - going from technical info to where you can buy it!

Here's one pic on this page from Intel, showing the 6 drives on the bottom:

Here's a tiny image with 10 drives installed (6 on the bottom, 4 in the middle). This would leave the three 5.25" bays up at the top for a 5in3 device:

Thanks... Noticed this.

Upgradable to support an additional four fixed hard drives or a combination of a six-drive hot-swap SATA/SAS drive bay, a six-drive hot-swap Ultra320 SCSI drive bay, a four-drive hot-swap Ultra320 SCSI drive bay for a total of 10 fixed or hot-swap hard drives(hot-swap drive bays support one-inch hot-swap hard drives)

Yes, and I think in addition to this, the three 5.25" bays at the top could accommodate a 5in3 backplane like the ones supermicro, Norco and Icy Dock make.... with or without the aid of the nibbler!

Only 2 SATA ports though

Yeah, acknowledged; that's what the PCI-X and PCI-e ports are for. ;)
