Dell SAS 5 Support

Featured Replies

I am a new Unraid user trying to get a Beta6 server going on some older hardware. My setup has a built in Dell SAS 5 raid controller along with a built in SATA controller. The drives on the SATA controller work perfectly however my cache drive, which is on the SAS Controller refuses to spin down. I have searched  the forums a bit already trying to determine if the controller is incompatible with Unraid or if I am running into some other issue. the results however were of little help.

What I do know is that the Dell SAS 5 is a LSI SAS 1068 (B0) with IR Firmware. It does not appear that the B0 model is capable of running IT firmware. Running the hdparm -y command to suspend the drive like unraid does results in a " SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: f0 00 00 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 " message. Can anyone tell me if this controller should be working with Unraid, or if the controller can be made to work with unraid?

The LSI 1068 chipset does not support over 2.2TB drives. If that works for you, you should be able to flash IT on it (ie sasflash -o -b MPTSAS.ROM). Yes, it is different than the Perc, but it can be flashed.

The drive size limitations don't bother me, however i have already made multiple attempts to flash it to IT firmware. The firmware images I have found cannot be loaded on the controller because the Dell SAS 5 is a B0 Version of the LSI SAS 1068, which apparently has a smaller amount of firmware memory than other 1068s. The images i was using were directly form the LSI site. If you could point me to a place to download MPTSAS.ROM I am willing to keep trying. Would flashing the controller to the IT firmware allow the spindown command to function properly?

Verified again that i cannot cross flash this controller to it, it claims that the firmware image is 2mb but the controller has only 1mb. So back to my original question, is there any way around the hdparm issue i am having with this controller, or is this a limitation that make it incompatible with Unraid?
