Connecting unRAID and Windows servers to same UPS

Featured Replies

Hi.  I searched around here and found a few posts on this topic but none directly on point to my use case.  I currently have an unRAID server connected to a CyberPower UPS and I'm using the APCUPSd plugin to execute the shutdown.  Now that I'm adding another (Windows) server which will also be connected to the same UPS (a bigger one), I'm wondering what's the easiest way to set up one server to issue the shut down command to the other before shutting itself down?  Both will be 24/7 and I was thinking that USB connecting the Windows server would make the most sense so I could also use the CyberPower software.  But how would I set up the unRAID server as slave?  Can that be configured through the APCUPSd plugin?

You will probably have to use APCUPSD on both machines to get them to work together. I know that is what I have done. Since my unRAID is meant to be the "always on" system it is the master and my PC is the slave. APCUPSD for Windows is free. Just do a search.

It should be as simple as configuring your apcupsd settings on the slave machine to look for information on the address of the master.

I have this set up, with unraid as master (did not have to change any settings) and windows as slave.

Now two things to keep in mind.

You should make sure that any switches or routers that form the LAN that connects these two are also plugged in to battery backup... afterall if the power goes down and your master can't send the power down packet to the slave it won't powerdown.

Also easy to overlook is that shutdown order is important.  If you have the master set to shutdown at 10 min left and the slave at 5 min left, the master will long be off before the slave would know to power down.

Any chance you're running Windows 8?  The APCUPSD manual only ists OS support for Windows up to 7 (it's dated this month too).  If APCUPSD is not an option, are there others?  I notice the UPS has a serial port and USB.  Any chance I could use a serial to USB converter to just direct connect both servers instead of a master/slave setup?

I would check on the APC site and forums about APC software with regard to useage on various Windows OS's.  Win8 really uses mostly Win7 code as it underpinnings so the APC for win 7 may well work!
