February 22, 201511 yr I have spent the past few days looking at multiple threads about having plex either A. run over the vpn or B. bypass it. The problem I see is every thread pretty much ends in the same thing, "it worked for a bit but now it doesn't". I am currently running unRAID 6 for my OS and have a rt-n66u as my router. I want to know if there is a way I can setup plex to bypass the OpenVPN interface? Thanks!
February 22, 201511 yr I don't know about setting it up with your Rt-n66u but I have it working with advanced routing rules on my pfSense box. I have most of the traffic going through the vpn but I bypass the vpn for all Plex traffic.
February 22, 201511 yr I also have it bypassing OpenVPN on my PFsense router as well. I use PIA as my VPN provider and they aren't very port forwarding friendly so this is how I get it working. Are your running openVPN on the your unraid box or your router? It will make a difference. david
February 22, 201511 yr Author I'm currently running OpenVPN on the router itself but I could easily migrate that to the unraid box if necessary. What routing rules do you have in place to have plex bypass the VPN? I would just open ports with the provider but I'd like to not go that route due to security.
February 22, 201511 yr The only way to get plex to work from and outside network is either to open up a port (preferably not plex's default port) or if it is only you wanting to access plex when you are away from home, you can just setup a home vpn server and then connect to your home VPN server to watch plex.
February 23, 201511 yr Hello. Yes its possible. I run peter_sm's 64bit plugin on the unraid box. I mainly use it as a secure login to check the machine or reboot if needed incase there is a problem. I login mainly threw my android phone. The only problem I have is that I am unable to see shares on the client on another PC. But that's because I haven't set up the client PC. I access them perfectly with ES File Manager on the phone. Hope it helps.
