February 25, 201511 yr Is it possible to replace a disk with a new one of the same size or larger without rebuilding the array? I'd prefer to avoid having the array unprotected for any period, and I've got an older Seagate 2TB with a few bad sectors that I'd like to replace with a 4TB WD Red.
February 25, 201511 yr No - but there is a way to protect yourself from a failure during the rebuild. The key is to stop the array and backup the config folder of the flash. Then replace / rebuild onto the larger disk. DO NOT DO ANY WRITES TO THE ARRAY! Should the rebuild fail, make sure that the original 2T disk is attached to the server. Replace the config folder on the flash. When you restart the array, the configuration will be back to the way before you started. The old 2T drive will be back in the array.
