Acer Aspire easyStore H340

Featured Replies

Hi!

I'm looking to build a new unraid setup, and while searching for cases/mobos, etc, I came across this:

http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/2009/04/30/hands-on-acer-aspire-easystore-home-server/

It's actually an Atom motherboard inside a nice 4bay case. Runs Windows home server by default, so I'm assuming unraid should run on it.

It's perfect for someone like me who wants a small box to cope with storage needs.

Anyone by any chance uses one and tried Unraid?

Thanks!

The review is not written by a hardware guy, no motherboard or chipset info, no power usage, and comments like this:

On the downside, that side fan you see above is enormous, and cooling is augmented by a second fan on the rear of the unit – let’s hope they spin slowly, as there’s potential to make a racket here.

Does he think a smaller fan would be quieter?

In the user comments below, someone mentions it has an ICH7R, so compatibility looks very likely.  No mention of what chipset the Gigabit networking is using, but lately, chances are good that it is supported.  Will have to be tested.  Someone asked about Kill-a-Watt readings, but no word yet.  Does look like a good candidate for a small system.  It unfortunately comes with 2 640GB drives installed, which will be a drawback for many.

There are a few reports on the net, but typically the consumption should be close to atom level usage. It has a 200W PSU; don't know if there are heat issues. I'm guessing that by spinning down the disks it shouldn't be much of an issue. As for the specs (some of them):

Processor Intel Atom Processor 230

Chipset Intel 945GC Express Chipset + ICH7R

Flash ROM 256 MB flash

RAM 2 GB DDR2 667 MHz unbuffered SDRAM

Front I/O 1 USB2.0 Port

Rear I/O 1 RJ-45 LAN port, 4 USB2.0 Ports, 1 e-SATA port, 1 recovery/reset pinhole

Networking Gigabit Ethernet

Can't find which gigabit controller it has.

It unfortunately comes with 2 640GB drives installed, which will be a drawback for many.

Actually it seems it was that specific review unit that had those disks. It seems it will be available with either 1 or 3 1TB disks (One of which holds the WHS software, but supposedly can be used as storage for unraid).

A nice feature is also the PCI-x slot. Can be used to add more e-sata ports, etc.

It is estimated to cost ~$399 and that includes a 1TB disk. It's only now starting to emerge in various sites, since I think a north American launch was done just a couple of days ago.

Thank you for correcting that.

Really interested in this box specially if Tom could do a smaller disk count pro key.

More comments found here, and at Newegg.

If I could find a local retailer with the easyStore, I'd guinea pig the hell out of it. I can only seem to find it mail order which makes returning it difficult and costly.
