Hi new user here

have just set up a small 4 bay unraid box, basic unraid 1tb parity 2 x 1tb  data disks and 1 x 500gb outside of array using snap

With plex media server my disk 1 and parity never spin down but i need them to.

Have tested this by switching plex service off and indeed both drives do  spin down.

Otherwise have tried sleep function which works  but cant get it to wake (wol) Another story for another day.

 

Have read through forums and as i understand  plex does do a lot of background work, preventing drives from spinning down.

How can i work around this? Can i use the drive outside of array for plex functions? would this work?

Are there any definitive guides out there to set my drives up to spin down in this way.

Yes unless you use a disk outside of your array for your plex library you are going to have the issue with your array disks spinning the whole time.

 

Most people use a cache disk for this purpse, but if you have an disk mounted outside the array with snap that should work to.

 

What I am unsure about, becuase I don't use SNAP is how to address that disks so that you can tailor the settings for your setup.

 

How do you have plex installed, plugin (which one) or docker?

 

If you are using PhAzE's Plex Plugin what you need to do is set your library / config directory to some place on the drive outside your array, and I also recomend you set the transcode directory as outside of your array as well. You do not have to change the install directory (the default is set to ram so changing it improves your RAM footprint.)

I  just got  plex from plex website for unraid but will get the phaze plug in and try to set it up that way if that's better. 

I'm new to this so just needed pointers on command line,  setting up directories for plex apps in drive outside of array etc.  if indeed that's the way I have to do it.
