December 17, 200619 yr Everytime I reboot the server, I have to type in the "root' password. Is this really necessary? How do I change this so it does not ask for a password. thanks Jim
December 17, 200619 yr I'm not sure what you are seeing, but I've NEVER had to enter a password when I reboot my server. The only time I've needed to is when I'm telnetting into it. -PGPfan
December 19, 200619 yr Everytime I reboot the server, I have to type in the "root' password. Is this really necessary? How do I change this so it does not ask for a password. thanks Jim Hi Jim, Which password prompt are you referring to?
December 19, 200619 yr Author Ok I feel a bit foolish! When I set up the server I assumed that when it asked you to enter a password at the telnet, it was required as to start the server and that is how I have been using since then thanks for your help. Jim
December 19, 200619 yr Actually, it prompts for a "Login" At that prompt you can enter "root" (as the user ID) and be logged in as the user "root". It does not ask for a "Password" for the "root" login and that is one of the items on Tom's laundry list of security enhancements to be fixed at some point. In other words, it should prompt for a password. And if you do not know the password, it should not allow access via telnet. As it is, NO business would ever put an unRaid server into place, since any user of their LAN would have access to any of the files stored on it, to read, modify, or delete. So... adding a password to telnet access will open up new markets for unRaid. Expect one eventually. And as you found, there is no need to log in... you can do most everything from the web-interface. I expect the web-interface will also need a password at some point to do anything but view status for the same reason... In a business you would not want just anybody re-configuring your disks in the array. Joe L.
