Best way to add 4 new harddrives and aoc-sas2lp-mv8 to existing setup?

Featured Replies

Hi I have unraid 5.06 running with 7 drives. 1 4tb parity, 4-3tb disk, 1-2tb disk, and 1-1tb cache drive. Running on a ASUS Z87 plus motherboard. It has 8 sata ports and I am using 7 of them.

I purchased a Supermicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 card and 4 more 3tb hard drives.  I am trying to figure out the proper or best order to go about adding this new equipment. Should I add the supermicro card with the new drives attached? Or add the card first then add the drives one by one? Should I do this with my exist array drives attached? Then preclear the 4 new drives without upsetting the existing 7 drives?

Basically what I am doing is adding 4 more data drives + a expansion card. Thanks.

Also my setup is not using a graphics card. Would it be ok to install the supermicro card in the first pci express 16x slot that you would normally put a graphics card in?

That depends on whether your motherboard is happy to have a non-graphics card in that position (most are).  The easiest thing to do and see if the card is recognised during system boot.

Thanks it seems that the motherboard accepts it fine. I went ahead and attached all four drives and they are all recognized. I started preclear on those too. Getting 140+MB/s on all drives. Doing 3 cycles. Thanks.
