Top 10 Things to Do on a New Unraid 6 Server

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I just built the system in my signature and setup Unraid 6.  It seems that a lot of stuff has changed from Unraid 5. I wanted to see how other people go about setting up their servers initially. I don't know that many must have plugins and I'm not sure if there's any "must change" settings in Unraid 6. Maybe I'm missing something awesome!

What are the Top 10 things you would configure, install, or setup on your new Unraid 6 Server?

[*]Cache Drive

[*]Configure User Shares

[*]Sabnzbd

[*]Sonarr

[*]Couchpotato

[*]Plex

[*]Guacamole remote desktop (never used this before but it looks cool)

Definitely preclear drives as #1.

Then in addition to what you have, in any order:

Deluge

Headphones

CrashPlan

OpenVPN

That should make for a "top 12"

Which addons totally depends on you. For example, of those already named in this thread, plex is the only one I am using, but I do use others (in my sig).

Setup your backup scripts.

unmenu / mymain

powerdown script

screen

I think like most things it's going to be user specific.

Here's what I think the most common first steps are or should be.

Setup notifcations

Setup UPS support (if applicable)

Pre-clear your disks then format them in XFS

Setup Secheduled Parity Check

Setup SMB, AFP, and/or NFS

Setup notifcations

Setup UPS support (if applicable)

Pre-clear your disks then format them in XFS

Set up Secheduled Parity Check

Set up SMB, AFP, and/or NFS

This is getting close. I note that none of these were in the OP. The main thing I would add to this list is screen (already mentioned) for doing the preclears.

OpenVPN

Will OpenVPN give me access to the tower from outside the network, or will it give me access to my entire network from outside the network?

Nerdpack, Screen is included in it plus a few other important tools.

unRAID 6 NerdPack - CLI tools (iftop, iotop, screen, kbd, etc.)

I know but didn't mention Nerdpack since other than screen, most of the other stuff are not used by most users. It is the easiest way to install screen now.

"Yet".  ;)

You need the utempter package as well, the nerdpack is the easiest way to do it for now.

Hopefully other rescue tools will be added to it in the future, making it indispensable.

i.e. ddrescue, scrub, etc, etc.
