March 9, 201511 yr I want to replace an old 1 TB drive (disk8) with a new pre-cleared 4TB drive (I already have 4 TB parity). It's been a while since I did this, but I am now unsure what to do. I simply removed the old drive and put the new drive in it's place (same SATA port). When I powered up the server, disk8 shows a red ball and the word "Missing" under it in the Device column. When I select the new $ TB disk for slot disk8, then it shows a red ball and the word "Wrong" under it!!! I don't remember ever having seen this before. I thought it would say something like, start the array to rebuild this disk? Am I doing something wrong or am I just not remembering things clearly? Thanks.
March 9, 201511 yr Here's the basic process ... (a) Stop the array and unassign the disk you plan to replace. (b) Start the array so the disk is shown as missing. © Stop the array and assign the new disk (d) Start the array and it will do the rebuild From your description, you may not have Started the array with the disk unassigned so it showed as missing. I'd replace the 1TB drive; assign it; and Start the array to see if it recognizes it okay (if it starts to rebuild it, just let it finish -- then do the process above). Caveat: These steps work perfectly in v5 ... I've never tried a rebuild with v6 (don't use it on my main servers, only on a test box) ... so there MAY be some small variation when using v6 and the Dynamix GUI.

Thanks for confirming -- I was fairly sure that was the case; but always caveat it when I outline a process I haven't personally done

Here is what I did: 1. Stop array 2. select "no disk" on disk8 (the disk I intend to replace) At this point, disk8 slot says "Missing" and Identification is "no device" 3. start array disk8 is now redballed and says "not installed" 4. stop array disk8 is redballed and says "unassigned" 5. power down the server, remove old disk8 (a Samsung 1 TB), replace with new HGST 4T. 6. power up server disk8 now blueballed, 7. assigned HGST to disk8, At the bottom of the page, it says Stopped. Disabled disk replaced. Array Status: Start will bring the array on-line, start Data-Rebuild, and then expand the file system (if possible) 8. I then click "Yes, I want to do this" and then Start button. Unfortunately, at this point the web GUI became unresponsive. However, about 10 minutes later, I tried again and now there is an orange ball at the bottom of the page and "Data-Rebuild in progress" so I think it is working correctly. Thanks again for your help.
March 9, 201511 yr Yep ... sounds like it's working just fine now. ... just need to be patient for the hours it takes to do the rebuild
