Why are all drives spinning up while watching a movie?

Featured Replies

I recently upgraded to 4.4.2 (from 4.0 beta 9).  Now when I watch a movie I get the following:

1) Movie takes a *very* long time to start (with all disks initially spun down)

2) At movie start, about 7 of my 13 disks spun up

3) During the movie there was about a 15 second "freeze," then it continued

4) By the end of the movie, more of the disks were spun up

Does anyone know why disks other than the disk that the movie physically resided on would spin up? With previous version, only the single disk would spin up.

Thanks!

It looks like if I access the movie on the individual disk, only that disk spins up.  If I access it through the share, then all the disks in that share spin up...  Is there any way to change this?

I don't use User Shares myself, but I know that there are other threads very similar to yours.  Check the Keep directory entries cached section, and see if that helps.

This caching has helped me a lot.  I notice a huge difference in browsing shares and playing movies.  I hardly ever get a disc spun up that does not contain the movie.

Thanks all... I just implemented cache_dirs as explained in the post (using all the defaults).  I'll let you know how it goes!
