trbroyles1
Hi all! My 6 TB NAS is about full so it's time to upgrade. unRAID caught my eye because it would let me mix and match drives of varying sizes and get 100% usage of them. I'm speccing out a system right now with a total of 16 SATA ports. 8 on the MOBO. I'm looking at the Syba SI-PEX40071 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124070 -- Marvell 88SE9705 chipset) to add another 8 ports. The card is listed as working "straight out of the box" on the wiki...but it would be great to hear a community confirmation of that before shelling out the $$$ on it. Any feedback? Thanks! Not sure why that controller caught your fancy. Are you needing it to fit in a narrow slot. I wouldn't want 8 drives running off of 2 lanes. If you have an x8 slot, I'd recomend the SAS2LP or the M1015. Both about the same price but much better for simultaneous I/O (e.g., parity checks). Link to comment
trbroyles1
Great recommendation, thank you I will look @ getting one of those instead. Link to comment
garycase
Agree it's best to have more than 2 lanes if available. Since few motherboards have x2 slots, I suspect you have at least an x4, and likely an x8 or x16 slot available, so you can use a board that will take advantage of those additional lanes.
