Questions on upgrading from Unraid 3.0

Featured Replies

Was hoping someone might answer some upgrade questions for me - I currently have an unraid server with v3.0 pro software that has been running great for over two years, but I'm finally at the point where I'm maxed out on hard drives (have 11 drives plus the parity drive).  I found the guide on the Unraid Wiki "Upgrading from unRAID 3.x to 4.0".  Questions if I do this:

1)  Will I get the capability to now have 16 hard drives, up from my previous 11?

2)  If I backup the full contents of my current flash drive with the 3.0 software, and then have a problem of some type with the 4.4 upgrade, can I copy the original 3.0 backup onto the flash drive to restore the original settings?

I have a lot of data on this server and I don't want to risk losing it.  :-[

THANKS

Since you currently have a 12 drive system, you must have a Pro license, so you can upgrade freely, and install up to 20 drives, plus Cache drive.  See "How is unRAID licensed?" and the question that follows it.

I would assume there is a way to restore 3.0 to your flash drive, but I can't think of *any* reason why you would want to do that.  There should not be any real problems, except possibly the need for a newer flash drive.  You should be happier with the newest unRAID.  By the way, I would recommend going all the way to the latest 'beta' (v4.5-beta6), because it has been well-tested, is running on many users machines, and has many fixes over v4.4.  See the Release Notes.

I can't see any risks to your data.  The upgrade only modifies your flash drive, not your data disks.  I've never run v3.0, as I started right after it, but I believe the upgrade has been smooth for others.  And we are here to help if needed.

AWESOME!  Just upgraded.  If I knew it was this easy I would have done it long ago.  Now can grow to 20 drives!

Unraid rocks.  thanks
